Seeing real estate agents cry about Australia's Property Ponzi Scheme going down for the first time in years gives me immense pleasure.

Yes, ordinary people will unfortunately get smashed by this too, but real estate agents, and those guys who just leverage themselves to the tits buying property after property with debt, then making podcasts about how smart they are and selling courses, are grifters.

They add negative value to society - functionally useless people who extort broken markets to the detriment of normal people that just want to opportunity to work hard and eventually own a house at a reasonable price point to provide for their family.

Is it directly their fault? No, the system is broken and they simply exploited it.

But Australia's Property Ponzi scheme deserves to completely collapse.

Without collapse, we cannot begin the rebuild.

The residency selection process incentivizes medical students, writ large, to do research.

This is bad because:

1) Most people go to medical school to become doctors, not researchers. We should let them do the socially valuable thing they want to do and are presumably best at.

Almost immediately after graduation, doctors start quitting, and it drops at a continuous pace for 25 years.

No plateau. Just continuous decay.

Looks as bad as some of the survival curves in oncology!

They train for 7 years after college and quit in less than that. They get out as soon as they can!

That says one thing clearly - Graduating doctors are realizing that this is not what they signed up for

My mates and I are doctors in our 20s/30s/40s starting off our careers.

Absolutely everyone is gobsmacked at the budget changes.

Genuinely feels like our generation will get punished for working smart or hard.

None of us own investment properties yet - what’s the point now?

How do we get ahead now?

What was the financial incentive to sacrifice our 20s to train?

It feels like all the worst aspects of communism with none of the benefits…..

No incentivised housing/travel/childcare for doctors

No one in my group is having kids

Yet our alcoholic patients are on their 4th or 5th - supported via government programs

Wendy and I bought our home in Killara in 1983 for $118,000. She was flying with Ansett, I was at the bank. We saved the deposit in just under two years. The agent reckons it's worth about $3.2 million now but we'd never sell, too many memories. I don't understand why young people say it's impossible. We weren't on big money. We just had discipline 🏡

No one is saying doctors are poor or that they should be pitied. The point is that bedside medicine does not compete against the average American salary. It competes against the other things highly trained people could do with the same time, skill, intelligence, work ethic, and tolerance for stress.

A lot of doctors could make similar take home income doing far less clinical work, or no clinical work at all. Some can make excellent money in medicolegal consulting, device work, industry advising, health tech, expert witness work, locums, or administrative roles. In some cases, a doctor can generate income comparable to a salaried W2 job with a relatively small amount of self employed consulting time each week, while also getting more control over schedule, fewer nights, fewer weekends, less liability exposure, and more time with family.

That matters. Because the question is not just whether a doctor’s gross income sounds high to someone on the internet. The real question is what it takes to keep someone doing a job that involves years of delayed earnings, heavy training costs, call, sleep disruption, lawsuits, missed holidays, missed kids’ events, and life or death responsibility.

That is not a victim complex. It’s called opportunity cost. And if you underpay the hardest forms of clinical work relative to the alternatives, people will rationally do less of it.

The public never sees that we gave up our 20's and part of our 30's, have a large debt, and have lost the magic of compounding interest in our 401Ks compared to others.
