Brilliant bat box checks at Ashclyst Forest today with @jorabineau. We had two maternity clusters of Natterers bats, a Barbastelle in a Barbastelle box (!) and a cluster of Brown Long eared bats, along with gorgeous views all the way round.
@_sarahbutcher@ExeterCityBats@jorabineau What an amazing weekend! The horseshoe bat trip to Devon really delivered. Thanks so much to Devon bat group, @jorabineau, and especially @_sarahbutcher for hosting us and showing us about 250 horseshoe bats. That's quite a few!
Worrying about the Lesser horseshoe bats that roost here… (footage shown this evening was not filmed at Sidmouth, but another Lesser roost not too far away).
Another good set of hibernation counts today on the @PebblebedHeaths and in the @ExeterCouncil Catacombs, with a total of 7 Greater Horseshoe bats, 9 Lessers, 2 Long-eared bats and a Natterer’s bat. Some of the bats were hanging in unusual places which made finding them good fun.
Devon Bat Group’s hibernation visits in Exeter & on the @PebblebedHeaths today produced lots of bats and 4 species: totals of 7 Greaters, 8 Lessers, 5 Long eared and 1 Natterer’s bat. These were our 1st hibernation visit since 2020: so good to be back. 😃
A short video clip from last night’s bat group visit to Buckfastleigh. We saw Common and Soprano pips, Barbastelles and of course lots of Greater Horseshoe bats!

Noctule bats, three species of Pipistrelles, Greater horseshoe, Serotine and Daubenton’s bats starred in this evening’s Pips and Pints event with @DevonWildlife and @DevonMammalGrp. A lovely evening and a super crowd. :)
Tomorrow, starting at 8.15pm is our first face-to-face Pips and Pints event for a while. Meet at the top of the Catacombs in Exeter. Hopefully we should get at least two species of pips, some horseshoes and myotis over the flood relief channel. Pub is optional afterwards!
Tonight I have been monitoring the bat equivalent of an Old Boys Club! Only one adult female greater horseshoe among 63 males (plus 3 young females). What's that all about? #bats 🦇
@andrew_miggs@_BCT_@Devon_LNP The pip in my bathroom is definitely thinking about it, but hopefully we’ll still see a few this evening, especially with the temperatures being above 8°c here (currently forecast to be 15°c then). Could be different if it was the end of the week!
Join us on our virtual bat walk this Tuesday with @Devon_LNP as we discover which bats are still active during this Devon Dark Skies Week. We’re expecting to find at least two species of Pipistrelle bats and will hopefully hear some Horseshoe bats too. https://t.co/wI2DsWZgHg
