🚫 #Thread: Why Parandur Airport Project Needs a HARD NO! 🧵
1/8 Let's talk about the elephant in the room - the massive 4000+ acre land acquisition for #ParandurAirport. This isn't just numbers, it's about 3000+ families' ancestral lands & livelihoods! We lack the #Anthropological and #Sociological perspective!

If your government is conducting or assisting a genocide, and doing it in the face of overwhelming popular opposition, then you do not live in a democracy. Your ruling class does whatever it wants. This is a core problem and people need to grapple with it.
The decline of 20% in elephant population is significant and a cause of serious concern. On Wildlife week, hope leading conservation organizations @BNHSIndia@WWFINDIA@wti_org_india@IUCN and others consider this as a wake up call.

1/10 🌿 Ever wondered about the difference between environmental crime and environmental violation? I did too! Let's dive into the fundamentals to understand these terms and their implications on our ecosystem.
#EnvironmentalLaw#endENVcrime
10/10 🌏 We often view environmental harm as a mere violation rather than a crime due to a lack of recognition of its impact. It's high time we mainstream the dialogue on environmental crime to protect our ecosystem better. #EnvironmentalAwareness#ClimateAction
Environmental crime is a serious offence against nature and humanity, while environmental violations often highlight negligence. Both harm our planet, but recognising the difference is key to effective action.

So the US and Israel used the $320m Gaza temporary pier to do EXACTLY what they’d accused UNRWA and Palestinians of doing all along: smuggling troops into civilian populations through humanitarian aid convoys.
Every accusation is a confession.
Water crisis + heatwave don't stop K'taka from clearing another 150 acres of Sandur forest for iron ore .
This is in the catchment of river Tungabadra , near Daroji Sloth bear sanctuary. Deforestation near rivers kill rivers over time. Civilizations end by abusing their rivers.

It is high time to initiate a dialogue on the intricate relationship between #AirQuality and #ViolentCrime. Although our recent study conducted in #Chennai found a weak correlation, more research is needed.

Raw sewage being dumped in Buckingham Canal near Indira Nagar MRTS footover bridge on OMR, 10 min back.
@CHN_Metro_Water has been unable to standardise private sewage tankers, though they say that they can track private sewage tankers with GPS. They also have a monitoring centre to track movements of private sewage tankers.
Now, what action will the @CHN_Metro_Water, Water Resources Department take?
"Between 2018 and 2022, the number of wildlife, forest, environment, and coastal zone clearances increased 21 times, from 577 to 12,496."

The Dec 2023 floods resulted in 11,000 crores of loss for Chennai. This is the annual cost of erasing wetlands - the genesis of any city.
@chennaicorp scrap your plans to make a forest-park on what's left of Pallikaranai marsh.
Here, wetlands are more important than forests.
#Ennoregasleak: Shops in Ennore shut down as a mark of protest against govt's technical committee report. The 33 fishing village leaders and locals have been protesting for more than 40 days since the gas leak on Dec 26, 2023. They demand permanent closure of the fertiliser factory Coromandel International Limited. The technical committee report asks @Tnpcbofficial to levy Rs5.92 crore as environmental compensation and take legal action, apart from retrofitting the sub-sea pipeline that leaked ammonia.
