Imagine living off the grid in the North Idaho woods in 1992. You just want to be left alone.

Your son is out walking his dog when suddenly he growls and someone shoots his dog and kills him. Your 14 year old son looks up and sees a man in a ghillie suit with a rifle pointed at him who just shot his dog.

Your son shoots at him and runs away back toward your house, only to be shot in the back and killed. He died having now idea who killed him and his dog.

The next day, a sniper executes your wife while she's holding your baby daughter. She was shot in the face and killed instantly.

All of this started because you sold two sawed-off shotguns to an undercover agent and refused to become a government informant.

They gave you a false court date and set up armed surveillance all around your home, waiting for the moment they could escalate and make an example out of you.

Randy Weaver was a former U.S. Army Green Beret. He served his country before moving off grid with his family in North Idaho. His military background added to the tension for federal authorities, because he was well trained in weapons and survival, but he had no history whatsoever of violence nor was he a threat to anyone outside his property.

After an eleven day siege while Randy and his baby daughter baby were locked inside with the bodies of his dead wife and son, Randy finally surrendered.

The US government was later ordered to pay millions in settlement to Randy for what they did to him and to his family.
