@smarterparrot "The incentives may now be pointing in the direction of no longer sharing any promising research directions with the broader community, which would reverse centuries of traditions of open science and do serious long-term damage to the future of the field."
@stuartvyse@AutismActionNet@AmySFLutz If the facilitator senses that you don’t believe them, they may unconsciously retaliate by authoring a personal attack against you under the speller’s name.
@AltB56073878@autismgadfly Can social skills be taught to and practiced by autistic ppl with explicit, step-by-step instructions? I imagine social skills may be challenging to some similar to how math or writing may be to others.
@AutisticAnglo88@ProfAviLoeb Be a public figure for anti-vax, facilitated communication, chelation, drinking bleach, or other snake oil treatments for profound autism. Or be a person with profound autism disability and have your facilitator author a message that you want to be on the IACC.
@afcp_01 Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara uses the letterboard on his son and is motivated to promote facilitated communication. It’s unfashionable and politically inconvenient to speak up against pseudoscience and to hurt the egos of believers.
@Ericdeissler@AmericanALCHMY The hieroglyphs anecdote is from @TelepathyTapes, where the facilitator learned about hieroglyphs by googling it and somehow erroneously assumed her nonverbal female client knew about it independently. Telepathy, facilitated communication, and other grifts should be banned.
@AltB56073878@autismgadfly Is the inability to focus on social stimuli due to being distracted by other nearby stimuli or stressors? What if the only stimuli present in the room is social, and other stimuli are removed?
@AltB56073878@drdanajohnson@BealsKatharine Strategically speaking, wouldn't it be wiser for Dr. Apraxia and company to NOT receive federal funding and instead fly under the radar? The inevitable public scrutiny and mob backlash against funding pseudoscience may inadvertently lead to spelling being legally banned or worse.
@AltB56073878@drdanajohnson@BealsKatharine What Dr. Apraxia doesn’t know is how to train the motor skills of a speller to correctly answer a question when the facilitator doesn’t know the answer. She can beg for federal funding to research the topic or watch the message-passing test in 1993 Prisoners of Silence for free.
@mrsmeerka@BealsKatharine Do you think people who believe in aliens flying in UFOs, bigfoot, flat earth, anti-vax, bleach as autism cure, telepathy, cult, etc. are lying? Have you considered that maybe they're not intentionally lying but are unintentionally living under a false belief system?
@drdanajohnson@BealsKatharine The only independent typer associated with FC/RPM/S2C who is unprompted and not scripting is Jordyn Zimmerman. However, JZ pretends to be nonverbal, has never been letterboarded, and is of the position that she herself doesn't promote FC/RPM/S2C.

It’s interesting that speech pathologists support PROMPT therapy (speech therapy with physical prompting using their hands on mouths) but not facilitated spelling therapy. They should ponder why some physical prompting techniques are ok to them and others not. They need to think about how no meaningful progress for the most impaired has occurred under the existing methods they have used over the past 20 to 30 years. I know the history of FC & that facilitated spelling in the wrong hands can lead to exploitation of or misrepresentation of a speller’s “thoughts”. But Facilitated Communication done right (with eventual phase out of all “help”) would no doubt be life changing for many.
@drdanajohnson@BealsKatharine Idiot isn’t accurate. I think you’ve lost your mind in pursuing pseudoscience promotion. Spelling is no different from believing in aliens in UFOs, bigfoot, flat earth, anti-vax, bleach as autism cure, telepathy, cult, etc. You give parents false hope for a fake solution.
@and_kell She thinks we are idiots. There are way more of us who are seeing through her and she’s going to have to figure out what to do. By the way…what is “intimate familiarity with high functioning autism” mean??!!
@drdanajohnson@BealsKatharine If a speller goes out for lunch without the facilitator, and the facilitator doesn’t know what the speller had for lunch, why is it that when the facilitator asks the speller what they had for lunch, the spelled message will be wrong 100% of the time?
