Professor Paul Angermeier, Professor William Hopkins, and Associate Professor Ashley Dayer of @vt_fishwild were each awarded the Emerging Social Aspects of Global Change seed grant to support researchers who are interested in major global change issues. https://t.co/pxbtfskQkh
William Hopkins, a professor in @vt_fishwild, spent eight years researching the population decline of hellbenders. He discovered that in deforested areas, hellbender fathers are far more likely to eat their entire brood. https://t.co/KC7Y761mJl

A scientific team searching for white sharks in the Mediterranean Sea led by Dr. Francesco Feretti of Virginia Tech & his students, have TAG Scientist Rob Schallert also aboard. They’ve attracted Lamnid sharks but just need now the sought after species! They are out again!!
Darby McPhail was named the 2023 H.E. Burkhart Outstanding Master’s Student Award for @CNRE and FWC. While in the field in Belize, she led more than 115 international field technicians from different socioeconomic backgrounds on a project studying jaguars.
Joshua Mouser won the 2023 A.B. Massey Outstanding Doctoral Student Award for @CNRE and FWC. His research integrated the disciplines of ecology, biological systems engineering and conservation social sciences to improve best agricultural practices for stream health.

Participants in @VTMANRRS recently traveled to their national conference in Atlanta, Georgia. A number of students brought home awards, including CNRE doctoral student Zoie McMillian, who earned second place in the graduate research poster competition.
Morgan Karns won $500 for placing first among @CNRE entries in the 2023 Dennis Dean Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship Conference. Her research was titled: “Identifying and Facilitating Positive Experiences for Birders with Disabilities.”
CNRE alumnus Kevin Smith recently joined @vtfrec students in a field experience class near Blacksburg. Smith, who owns Big Timber Superior Hardwoods, was on hand to collaborate with Assistant Professor Corey Green and teach students about assessing tree value.
