دانشجوی ایرانی: اما من یک سوال دارم، عبدل. دختر عموی من در خیابان‌های ایران توسط گشت ارشاد شکار شد، چون حجابش درست نبود.

عموی من به اعدام محکوم شد، پنجاه ضربه شلاق توسط حکومت علی خامنه‌ای دریافت کرد، و تروری که ما تجربه کرده‌ایم غیرقابل تحمل است.

و شما می‌توانید تعجب ما را به عنوان ایرانیان تصور کنید، غم و اندوه ما را وقتی شنیدیم، عبدل، یک فایل صوتی فاش شده از شما که گفتید نمی‌خواهید درباره مرگ رهبر معظم خامنه‌ای نظر بدهید و مردم در دایربورن از مرگ او ناراحت بودند.

دانشجوی ایرانی: و من فقط یک سوال ساده دارم، عبدل. آن سکوت یک شکاف دهشتناک در جامعه ما داشت، و من می‌خواهم از شما بپرسم که آیا از آن سکوت پشیمان هستید؟

من می‌خواهم بپرسم آیا افرادی را که نگهبانانی داشتند، که از این تروریست برای تمام کارهایی که کرده است حمایت کردند، محکوم می‌کنید؟

من می‌خواستم بپرسم آیا شما صراحتاً علیه گشت ارشاد، علیه جمهوری اسلامی ایران که پنجاه هزار معترض را کشته است، می‌ایستید؟

عبدل، من چیزی درباره معترضان از شما نشنیده‌ام. عبدل، لطفاً.

عبدل السید: من از سوال شما قدردانی می‌کنم و متشکرم.

چیزی که به شما خواهم گفت این است: خیلی وقت پیش و خیلی اغلب، وقتی درباره نقش خود در جهان فکر می‌کنیم، ما خودمان را به پلیس جهان تبدیل کرده‌ایم.

و من فکر می‌کنم آنچه همه ما می‌خواهیم، آنچه همه ما نیاز داریم، دموکراسی بیشتر، آزادی بیشتر در جهان است، اما همچنین درک آنچه ما در واقع می‌توانیم و باید با توجه به آن انجام دهیم.

و اینجای نقطه نظر من است: یک نفر می‌تواند با حکومت یک کشور خارجی مخالفت کند. یک نفر می‌تواند در همبستگی با جنبش‌های آزادی و دموکراسی بایستد.

اما نگرانی من این است، وقتی یک نفر تصمیم می‌گیرد که ما قرار است برویم داخل و رهبری یک حکومت خارجی را حذف کنیم، چون اینجاست که چه اتفاقی می‌افتد: خیلی وقت‌ها، آن ناامیدی استفاده می‌شود تا منافع شرکتی را که سهم واقعی در منابع طبیعی یک کشور خاص دارند، توجیه کند. می‌فهمید منظورم چیست؟

عبدل السید: بنابراین، وقتی به ته خط می‌رسد، من همیشه طرفدار و همراه جنبش‌های دموکراتیک خواهم بود، همیشه.

اما من همچنین باور ندارم که ما حق داشتیم به جنگ برویم تا حکومت ایران را سرنگون کنیم. این مسئولیت ما نبود که این کار را انجام دهیم. این مسئولیت مردم ایران است که تصمیم بگیرند رهبری آن‌ها چه شکلی باید باشد.

و بنابراین در حالی که من با آزادی و جنبش‌های دموکراتیک می‌ایستم، من همچنین نگران هستم که وقتی شما شروع می‌کنید به گذاشتن منابع ما به سمت تغییر رژیم در کشورهای خارجی، بیشتر اوقات رژیم‌هایی که به دنبال تغییرشان هستیم، آن‌هایی هستند که در آن‌ها یک منافع منابع طبیعی وجود دارد و تبدیل به ابزاری برای منافع شرکت‌های ما می‌شود، و این چیزی است که من نگران آن هستم.

عبدل السید: و من همیشه می‌ایستم، همان‌طور که به شما گفتم، من همیشه می‌ایستم با جنبش‌هایی برای آزادی و دموکراسی.

اما باز هم، می‌خواهم مراقب باشم، زیرا چند بار شما را در مسیری به سمت جنگ برده‌اند که نتوانستیم خودمان را از آن خارج کنیم؛ تریلیون‌ها دلار در زیان‌ها، تحریم‌هایی که در نهایت به مردم آن کشورها آسیب رساند بیشتر از آنچه که به رهبری آن کشورها آسیب رسانده باشد.

و بنابراین آنچه به شما خواهم گفت این است که فکر می‌کنم شما می‌خواهید از من بشنوید که بگویم: «آه، خب، ایالات متحده مسئولیت دارد که در تغییر رژیم درگیر شود.»

و آنچه به شما خواهم گفت این است که ایالات متحده هیچ… ما نباید در کسب‌وکار تغییر رژیم باشیم.

اما من همیشه می‌ایستم با جنبش‌هایی برای آزادی و دموکراسی…

دانشجوی ایرانی: مبارزه ما برای آزادی و دموکراسی، مال ما، ایرانی‌ها…

عبدل السید: من باز هم، من آزادی و دموکراسی را برای مردم ایران می‌خواهم، هیچ سوالی نیست.

اما من می‌خواهم که آن توسط مردم ایران انجام شود، که به عنوان یک جامعه دور هم جمع شوند تا تصمیم بگیرند چگونه تغییر دموکراتیک را در جامعه خود ایجاد کنند.

بنابراین من واقعاً از سوال شما قدردانی می‌کنم، از شور شما قدردانی می‌کنم، و برای سوالی که پرسیدید سپاسگزارم.

I have realised that ignorance isn’t just a blessing. It is basically a superpower. It protects you from losing your mind over daily headlines.

In the past, before media and social media, most people probably knew very little beyond what was happening around them. Their world was smaller. And if something was wrong in that small world, at least there was a chance they could do something about it.

We now have unlimited access to information about everything happening everywhere, but most of the time there is absolutely nothing we can do about any of it. I think that is what drives people mad.

Gaza drives me crazy. It has affected my brain in ways I don’t fully understand. And I don’t think it is only because I know what is happening. It is the helplessness that gets to me. You see it every day, you know it is wrong, you want it to stop, and there is basically nothing you can do about it.

Same with Afghanistan, although with Afghanistan I at least do the little that I can. It is nowhere near enough, but at least there is some feeling that I am not just watching.

Maybe we were never meant to know this much about everything that is wrong with the world while having so little power to change any of it.

Anyway, thank you for coming to my TED Talk and listening to me vent.

Afghanistan has one of the youngest populations in the world, with around 63% of Afghans under the age of 25.

That can become our greatest advantage or one of our greatest vulnerabilities.

When young people have education, skills, jobs and a stake in their country, they build. When those pathways disappear, migration, addiction, despair and radicalization fill the vacuum.

Our youth are not the problem to be solved. The absence of opportunity is.
