MAJOR UPDATE: All planetary boundaries are assessed, and six are crossed.
For the first time ever, scientists have quantified all nine planetary boundaries. Six of them are already transgressed and we are increasing pressure on the others.

This past spring semester, while my AMAZING PI, Emilia (@emiliahsc), has been on sabbatical, I had the exciting opportunity to serve as instructor of record for her computational population genetics course. The entire course is publicly available on GitHub https://t.co/9WVG3UeLur
@aylwyn_scally Just read the paper and I agree with you. On real data (Fig. 3), only their method FitCoal infers a bottleneck at 900kya but on simulated data (Fig. 4), PSMC and SMC++ can recover the bottleneck, much deeper than the constant-sized part.
🚨New #ancientDNA data from #Africa🚨 and the first from the medieval #Swahili coast! Among the most amazing results are different participation from males/females in pop. mixtures (e.g. male Near Eastern & Persian ancestry mixing with female African ancestry).
We're thrilled to welcome new @YaleMed A/Prof Diyendo Massilani to the department! Dr. Massilani is an expert in ancient DNA and evolution. His new lab will focus on the genetic basis of human adaptation to local environments. Read more here! @Diyendo https://t.co/RL4b71dsMY
Updated preprint on our Coalescent-HMM method to infer population size history: https://t.co/vQIhZZtheW We extended the composite likelihood, did more some more simulations to understand how it behaves, and included some analysis of human data.
It is not even about the legitimacy of the question. And perhaps not even of scientific accuracy. But the sensationalism and offensive undertones of such rants is pretty appalling. Love the killer single-line thoughts of the 'traditionalists' though.
Computational biologist Mikhail Gelfand, well known to everyone in my field for his scientific achievements, is leading a brave effort within Russia to protest Putin's unprovoked war on Ukraine https://t.co/juR4xCUMvY
Our paper on the Grotte Mandrin (France), is out. We show that Homo sapiens made the so-called "Neronian" Palaeolithic industry there ~54,000 years ago. This is the earliest evidence we have in this part of the world for modern humans. https://t.co/cUNQingaQy
(1) Interesting new paper. Slimak et al report on the site of Grotte Mandrin in southern France. The authors claim the site shows Homo sapiens in western Europe thousands of years earlier than previously thought (ca. 57-52,000 years ago). My thoughts... https://t.co/eeMFC2SH1T
Ever wonder what the #3Dgenome folding🔺of a Neanderthal looked like?! Could it hold any clues as to where and why we have DNA 🧬and trait differences?
