Almost 50 years ago, Zimbabwe's liberation heroes crossed fields lined with landmines, laid specifically to stop them, in pursuit of a free country.

Today, a new generation of heroes walks back into those same fields. Not avoiding the danger this time. Seeking it out, one sweep at a time, in pursuit of the country's development.

This 🇿🇼 #HeroesDay2026, meet Odella.

Liberation was fought for this land. Development is what it was fought for. On #HeroesDay2026, we honour both kinds of heroes.

Since February, Odella's two teams have recovered and destroyed nearly 700 landmines...most of them the volatile R2M2 type.

Zimbabwe has already cleared 96% of its legacy minefields. Rushinga is part of the final push toward 100%.

Odella is a mother of three, a de-miner, and a native of Rushinga working with @TheHALOTrust, @UNDPZimbabwe & @EoJZimbabwe to clear landmines laid along the Zimbabwe-Mozambique border during the liberation war.

Her day starts at 3:50am. It doesn't end until the last centimetre of ground is swept clear. Find out what a day in her life looks life: ➡️ https://t.co/b4JZfxcayl
