Congratulations to #KAUST PhD student @FaisalMAlkhaldi, who won 1st place at the #LEAP24 AI Oasis Hackathon for his project “Accelerating Genetic Engineering.” The hackathon, supported by @ntdpsa, focused on integrating software creation using #AI.
@PSarkies Or it's a SINE derived from snRNA. Similar to how Alu are derived from 7SL RNA and have a very similar promoters to tRNAs. What is the mechanism that allows a genome to have several thousands of piRNAs with very similar sequence features? Clearly not duplications..
@PSarkies idea: piRNAs in nematodes evolve from massive transposition of a yet unknown SINE. The piRNA pathway can emerge relatively quickly by using those SINEs as mini-genes to transcribe 21U RNAs. The modern day Ruby motif/promoter is what remains from the original transposition
@itamar_lev I did a quick check and no, chemoreceptor genes score poorly for PATCs. This is not unexpected as PATCs are rare in genes not expressed in the germline. Here's a genome browser screenshot, gold boxes = chemoreceptor genes, blue bars = PATC density.
1/5 Our paper is out as a bioRxiv preprint. @sonia_elmouridi and @FaisalMAlkhaldi Like MosSCI, just better. Targeted single-copy and array integration synthesizing new and gradual improvements from the past 15 years across many labs. https://t.co/sgjevIiLfs
Modular safe-harbor Transgene Insertion (MosTI) for targeted single-copy and extrachromosomal array integration in C. elegans. https://t.co/kp01KqD3C6 #bioRxiv
And sincere thanks to Nature Methods for writing a short author story. Very grateful to the labs that trained me as a scientist and finding a place in the C. elegans community rather than pursuing particle physics... https://t.co/uivIsjoCm6
I’m humbled and grateful that the work of our students and collaborators has been recognized with this award. 🙏
Also, I found out via Twitter just now.
I am excited to share a new study led by Shachar Givon & @MatanSamina w/ Ohad Ben Shahar: Goldfish can learn to navigate a small robotic vehicle on land. We trained goldfish to drive a wheeled platform that reacts to the fish’s movement (https://t.co/ZR59Hu9sib).
@PSarkies In 8 digit format, 22-02-2022 is the closest palindromic date. It occurs on the first 3 years of every decade, all on the month of Feb, it will switch to Dec with the new century. It will then stop for 800 years and will only repeat 31 times every millennia. I think
