Was a pleasure speaking to students @GreenwoodAcad about a career in Speech and Language Therapy as part of their careers week! Lots of thoughtful questions from students. Arranged via @InspiringTF -great way to volunteer + share about your career! #mySLTday#SLTpeeps@RCSLT
Although it looks like things have improved since I started my training in 2011 (if Practice Educator training I attended recently about supporting minoritised students is reflective of training SLT students are receiving) so we are moving in the right direction!
Absolutely agree! My SLT training in 'cultural competency' felt more like an hour tick box exercise. In reality SLTs work mostly w/ clients not from the dominant culture/lang so this needs to be embedded in all training for therapy to be meaningful, effective + reduce harm
SLT/SLP training programs need to seriously prepare their students to work with clients who are not from the dominant culture/language, most of the training currently looks like an afterthought or addendum
Majority of my SLT training felt like 'this is what we know works for monolingual, English speaking ppl with no other needs... So do the same for all other clients, maybe consider using pictures of racially diverse kids and include some ethnic foods = cultural competency' 🙄
Pride has such a deep and important history. Thank you to @SLTinSEND @HelenATSLT@jbmdavies @rickvak for telling us about what Pride means to them! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
I'm looking for #autistic adults to take part in an international online survey for my PhD study on #autism discrimination and wellbeing. Participants can be from anywhere in the world. Scan the QR code or click the link below to access the survey

'British accent therapy' sounds a lot like erasure of non-native cultural heritage identifiers. 😩 It's racist and horrible to perpetuate that a 'British' accent is somehow superior. Our diverse heritages and accents are 2 be celebrated, not erased+ replaced w/ 'Queen's English'
I saw this, this morning… I just wanted to say, let’s embrace who we are! Accents are part of our identities and tell our life stories. Today I am embracing my Mediterranean heritage. If you don’t understand my accent please let me know and I will repeat :) @OfSlts Thoughts?
We are once again looking for autistic adults (already diagnosed, aged 18+, in Scotland) to join a register of supporters for diagnostic training
Clinicians developing diagnostic skills need practice, which means we need YOU - real life autistic people!

@elenadice1976 I think SLTs could be so helpful in Adult MH and also all services with vulnerable people! I think a lot of folks could benefit from support to overcome barriers in communicating with vulnerable ppl, there's so many reasons why someone might find it hard to communicate verbally
