The IMF's Office in Lebanon 🇱🇧 hosted an "Ambassador for a Day" event with the embassies of Canada and the UK. Lebanese high-school student, Mia Chahwan, joined us to learn about the IMF's work in Lebanon and visited @berytech to explore the exciting Lebanese startup scene.

The second in a series of 💡”spotlight on policy” events, Spotlight on Fiscal Policy, was held by the Center for Policy Analysis at the @lebamericanuni in collaboration with the @imfnews on June 6 at the Beirut Campus. @Presidentmawad delivered a welcoming word, while M.P. @IbrahimKanaan gave some introductory remarks. The event featured a panel discussion with notable participants (@haninalfakih, @PaulAbiNasr, Karim Daher, Frederico Lima, and @aliamoub), who examined the current fiscal policies and proposed reforms aimed at adopting a medium-term fiscal strategy consistent with debt sustainability, enhancing revenue generation, and improving public financial management.

The event concluded with a call to action from Dr. Leila Dagher, Assistant to the President for Public Policy, who stressed that not much has been done in the past four years and that we still have a long way to go. The country is not short on experts or ideas, but unfortunately, we are short on political will.

It was a pleasure to take my students from International Organizations class at the Lebanese University (faculty of law) on an eye-opening visit to the IMF Resident Representative office in Lebanon, where they got the opportunity to ask all their questions regarding the agreement signed between the Lebanese government and the IMF and the reforms included in it. Learning about the work of IMF firsthand goes beyond the curriculum and brings real insights into the studies. A big thank you to Frederico Lima, the IMF Resident Representative for Lebanon, Hanin Al Fakih, economist at IMF, and the whole team for their presentation and for answering all our questions.

Cost of inaction is extremely high which is negatively impacting depositors and citizens. Yes, there is still opportunity to save the Lebanese economy but an action is needed now.
