Multiple buyer accounts all ship to one logistics center in Okayama Prefecture that won't answer questions. Export records show over 50 tons, roughly 100,000 volumes, shipped to the US since last year. No buyer has been identified.
Separately, court documents confirmed Anthropic's "Project Panama" bought millions of books in the US, cut the spines off, scanned them, and shredded the originals. An internal memo said the goal was to "destructively scan all the books in the world." Similar operations have been reported across Europe.

My Take
Anthropic's US book operation came out in court filings earlier this year. Project Panama. Millions of books, cut the spines off, scanned, shredded. Their VP chose the codename so nobody outside the company would find out. That story broke and apparently the same operation just moved to Japan. Anonymous buyer accounts, a warehouse in Okayama that won't take questions, and 100,000 volumes of specialized academic texts that nobody buys to resell.

I don't know how you build a trillion-dollar industry on material you had to acquire in secret through middlemen because you knew the public would object. Authors spent years on those books and now they're fed through a scanner and thrown away so a chatbot can sound smarter. If the data was free to use, they wouldn't need codenames and anonymous warehouses. The lawsuits over who owns this material have barely begun and I think the copyright exposure across the whole AI industry is enormous. Anthropic's internal memo said the goal was every book in the world, which describes the foundation of the product.

A war that Hamas started with deliberate and historic atrocities against innocent Jews - teenagers, kidds, families. As such, Israel's stated military objective is total victory against Hamas and the return of all their hostages. In order for a genocide label to stand it must be the ONLY rational explanation for the pattern of conduct. The Gaza ware fails this test miserably. Given the distribution of deaths - vast majority fighting age males, over 2 million tons of aid provided in a heated war zone, systematic warnings of civilians to evacuate (leaflets, pagers, calls, roof tapping), etc. - the pattern of conduct is conclusively that of an urban war against a terrorist group that embeds in civilians, uses children in war, and employs human shields (all major IHL war crimes, btw).

⚡️This is much bigger than most people think.

AI is becoming the greatest cognitive multiplier ever created precisely when the population’s ability to independently audit cognition is weakening.

That combination creates a new hierarchy with enormous consequences.

At the top, a small group uses AI to extend already-developed judgment. They can ask precise questions, reject seductive nonsense, synthesize across domains, create systems, automate organizations, allocate capital, and command machine labor.

Below them, a much larger group receives answers.

That looks like democratization because everyone has access to the same machine.

The underlying power distribution moves in the opposite direction.

The decisive scarce resource becomes the ability to know when the machine is wrong.

That ability depends on the very cognitive foundations being eroded.

So the future divide may become much deeper than educated versus uneducated, rich versus poor, or white-collar versus blue-collar.

It becomes sovereign mind versus rented mind.

One class uses machines.

The other class lives through machines.

One class builds representations of reality.

The other class consumes representations produced for it.

One class can withdraw attention, inspect claims, understand incentives, and reconstruct the system from first principles.

The other class experiences the world through interfaces.

That is why elementary reading scores deserve to be understood as far more than an education statistic.

They are an early measure of whether a civilization is still capable of manufacturing independent minds at scale.

A society that loses that capacity can remain wealthy.

It can remain technologically dominant.

It can remain militarily powerful.

It can even become richer for a while because automation compensates for declining human competence.

Then something fundamental changes underneath the prosperity.

The civilization stops belonging cognitively to most of the people living inside it.

They inhabit systems they cannot explain, obey rules they cannot trace, consume narratives they cannot audit, use technologies they cannot understand, and vote on institutions whose causal structure exceeds their comprehension.

At that point democracy itself becomes increasingly ceremonial because self-government requires selves capable of government.

That is the real truth underneath the reading problem.

Civilization depends on turning children into adults who can inherit the world.

When that transmission fails, the society eventually becomes a machine maintained by a shrinking priesthood and inhabited by people who know how to use it but no longer know how it works.

And once a civilization reaches that point, its greatest vulnerability comes from the simple fact that the people capable of maintaining complexity have become rarer than the complexity itself.
