"[T]he lessons that most inform my giving began much earlier." Holly Fogle of @Monarch_Fdn and @bridgeprojectny reflects on the early influences on her #giving approach and shares what happens when #philanthropy operates on more #trust: https://t.co/6NIGkOefDc
The 2021 expanded #ChildTaxCredit empowered families with more money, but what did they do with it? They used it to put food on the table, pay the bills, and buy clothes and school supplies.
In our latest piece, Family Health Project makes our case for optimism.
Here, optimism sits at the intersection of resolve and action. It’s not passive or wishful thinking. It starts with scaling direct giving programs to new moms in deep poverty.

"The program, which builds on the city's previous pilot program, aims to combat poverty and income inequality by providing direct cash payments to families...below 250% of the federal poverty level."
Amazing work from our neighbors in Cambridge! 👏👏👏

This @thenation piece with Matthew Desmond @just_shelter about CA poverty is a must-read.
"The proof is in the pudding. California is comfortable with a progressivism that doesn’t threaten the material well-being of affluent Americans.” https://t.co/Gp7rjNixk4
States are establishing and expanding Child Tax Credits – responding to the rising cost-of-living by putting cash in the pockets of parents. @rebeccabailin points out this national trend following stimulus checks and the federal CTC.
We can throw our hands up at the shameful political failure that ended the expanded CTC.
But in the face of roadblocks to progress – both new and old – FHP is making a case for optimism through direct giving to new moms and their babies.

As the Superintendent of Denver Public Schools, I saw daily how growing up in poverty can shape a child's future.
Over the next few weeks, I'll highlight how the #ChildTaxCredit benefited over 60 million kids and why I've been relentlessly advocating for it. 🧵
The expanded #ChildTaxCredit provided a monthly, no strings attached #GuaranteedIncome for nearly every parent in America. It cut child poverty in half, to record lows. When it expired, child poverty spiked. In other words: we know for a FACT that guaranteed income is effective.
We know that 💵 transfers ⬇️poverty.
But frequency matters. This policy brief by @CpspPoverty shows that monthly payments are more effective in reducing poverty than annual lump sums.
Reliable, recurring payments ⬇️ volatility and ⬆️flexibility.

In @nytimes this week, @DAcevedoGarcia discusses how social policy exclusions have exacerbated child poverty for immigrant families. Her research with @diversitydataki has shown equitable safety net policies must be inclusive in order to be fully effective https://t.co/cYxHm6wfNK
Thanks to the $381 million supplemental budget signed by @MassGovernor, families in need will continue to have access to the extra COVID-19 SNAP benefit. Read about the importance of this program below: https://t.co/snC3OmMSVP
For shame.
I want a Congress that would have been terrified to dismantle programs that cut child poverty in half & reduced eviction rates to the lowest on record.
The U.S. Built a European-Style Welfare State. It’s Largely Over. https://t.co/vuRJ3wCf3W
The fully-refundable Child Tax Credit compellingly demonstrated the power of policy to reduce poverty.
And it’s back on Biden’s fiscal budget for 2024.
