What a venue! What an event!
#Cryo2ice is almost over, but not quite yet.
Time now to summarise this incredible "family reunion" of our milk and cookies, CryoSat and ICESat-2.
We're about to hear from all our chairs, before a wrap up from @tparrine & @Thorsten_Markus
🌍 Celebrating 30 Years of Precise Altimetry! 🌊
💡 This year marks the 30th anniversary of precise altimetry, a major milestone in Earth observation. To celebrate, the @esa , in collaboration with our parent company, the French Space Agency (@CNES ), hosted the "30 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry" symposium this week in Montpellier, France.
👨👩 As a global leader in altimetry, CLS is proud to have 42 of our experts giving 28 talks and also presenting numerous posters showcasing our expertise in data qualification and sea level products for the international scientific community.
🛰 With over 30 years of experience in processing, calibrating, and validating altimetry data, CLS has developed unique processing chains that provide critical data to scientists, climatologists, oceanographers, biologists, and hydrologists worldwide. These insights help calculate ocean, lake, and river levels, as well as address key environmental challenges like:
📈 Monitoring global Mean Sea Level rise, a key global warming indicator (in partnership with LEGOS and CNES)
💧 Tracking inland water resources, including surface, depth, and flow of water networks.
❄️ Observing ice sheet dynamics and their impacts on sea level rise.
🌊 Identifying areas at risk of coastal flooding.
👏 A huge congratulations to our team for their contributions this week, representing the 120+ dedicated individuals at CLS who work daily to advance these crucial activities. Together, we are turning data into action for the benefit of the planet.

UPDATE 19:30 UTC (20:30) CET
We have confirmation of the atmospheric reentry of ERS-2 at 17:17 UTC (18:17 CET) +/- 1 minute over the North Pacific Ocean between Alaska and Hawaii.

With @ESA_EO I am exploiting data from historical missions ERS-1, ERS-2 and ENVISAT in the frame of the #FDR4ALT project. Today is a bit special because ERS-2 is coming back to Earth ! I believe it is not something I will see very often in my carreer !

(2/2) So 98% reduction ! Actually proud to be in a team that is ready to change their habits 💪
Thanks also to @ESA_fr and @eumetsat because the conference started on a Tuesday which is way more practical to take the train.
(1/2)Last week I was at the #S3VT in Darmstadt, Germany. From @CLS_Group , we were 9 people to take the train 😍 My collègue Victor Quet decided to look at the impact in terms of CO2 emissions :
✈️ —> 4.5T CO2eq
🚆 —> 0.0635 T C02eq
@EmmaWoolliams@jdpereira@EeroRinne I remember this one quite well 😁 And of course it is totally accepted that we manage the agenda in a way that parents can go and get their kids. It is common sense to me 👍
Arrived in #Darmstadt for the Sentinel-3 validation team meeting. We will present the excellent performances on the sea-ice reprocessed products ☺️ @ESA_EO@CLS_Group#s3vt#altimetry
Finally out! Sea ice freeboard from ERS-2!
Arctic sea ice radar freeboard retrieval from the European Remote-Sensing Satellite (ERS-2) using altimetry: toward sea ice thickness observation from 1995 to 2021 https://t.co/d3uX6QI8tY
Everything is happening.
While climate scientists have been talking about North Atlantic sea surface temperatures these last few days, what's going on with sea ice in Antarctica is even more extreme, nearly 2.4 million km² below the 1991-2020 mean, with a big jump down today.
Memory from last night at the great #IGSSeaIce dinner … I was really thrilled to meet so many people from the sea-ice community. I learned so much ! Hopefully we’ll meet again soon ! Bye Bremerhaven ✌️
@EmmaWoolliams@igsoc Have a safe journey ! I’m leaving tomorrow around 14:00 so I guess that we won’t cross paths. Enjoy the workshop, I’ll be interested to read any feedback ☺️
