Rookie WRs often really get rolling in the back half of their first NFL seasons 🔥
However, it's not always as simple as "rookie = good" down the stretch. With that in mind, I looked at how often the rookie WRs are running a route on their team dropbacks...who has been trending up, who has been a full-time player all season, etc. That's Step 1 for spotting the second-half boost.
That and some notes on what I'm seeing from these rookies vs. my priors in today's piece:

@Moorelife1 This is one of those where when looking at it more closely it appears he was down but that is also a very bad look by the refs to blow it dead. There is no way he was certain that the player was down but it is certain that it won’t be a TD with it being blown dead
@BrettKollmann It really is wild. If a normal player on the bubble did what he did today there would be almost no chatter about it and everyone would carry on. Instead there are conspiracies about how the line is intentionally playing poorly and coach is trying to not let him succeed. Crazy…
Very bittersweet to see that this will be @MatthewBerryTMR's last ever Love/Hate, the biggest article in fantasy football for 25 straight years, and one I grew up on and idolized
But I couldn’t be happier for Matthew, who’s finally making the time to prioritize what matters most to him. He’s more than earned it.
Story time for those who care:
In the article, Matthew said he hoped to be remembered as much for helping other analysts break into the space as he is for touting Mike Vick in 2011. (I remember exactly where I was when I read that article -- at an internship, wishing the spreadsheets I was looking at were football-related)
And for me, this certainly rings true. No one has helped my career more than Matthew.
For years, I reveled in obscurity, writing articles no one read, firing off tweets into the void. Then one day, Matthew followed me. Two weeks later, he tweeted, “Hey, this guy does really good work.” Overnight, I went from 3K → 22K followers. It was genuinely one of the happiest days of my life at a time when I really needed it (my father was dying of cancer).
I had been trying for years to break into the industry full-time, and was always told that my work was great, but I needed a bigger social media following. With that now taken care of (thanks Matthew), I received competing full-time offers less than a year later. My dream came true, but there was also a lot of sketchiness going on behind the scenes. I didn't know what to do, I didn't know who to trust, and, after my dad passed, I really didn't have anyone I could talk to. So, on a whim, I cold-DM’d Matthew. (Lesson for the kids: always shoot your shot.)
Not only did he reply, he called me that same night. We talked for two full hours! I couldn't believe it. The busiest man in the world, the most famous person I could think of, talked to me (some rando) for two full hours. Not only that, but he gave me amazing advice, and genuinely cared about me and what might happen next. We talked on the phone again for an hour the next weekend.
Since then, Matthew has been my biggest mentor and a great friend. And I'm sure a number of analysts have stories just like this.
LOVE that he's taking more time to spend with his family. HATE that this will be the last time I get to read my favorite article.
@ffdataroma Maybe this will look silly soon but Downs is unstartable and Chuba just got a nice contract. Downs has nice metrics but I believe he would need a change of scenery to be valued above Chuba
@Ihartitz Do either of these have a strong correlation with total carries? i.e. Yards After Contact Per Carry vs Carries
It does feel like many of the RBs at the top had somewhat limited touches and then guys like Taylor in the bottom were getting heavy workloads.
@amazehayes_ I play in 4 dynasty and 3 redraft and it feels like the perfect number. It’s enough leagues where I can’t hype focus on who I am playing against so I get to enjoy redzone, get excited when my players score TDs, then check my scores throughout the day to inevitably go 4-3!
@jlarkytweets I don’t know but I still get surprised when people defend billionaires and how they need to keep more money. It should be a topic that everyone can get behind but for some reason it isn’t the case.
