A Japanese guy asked me if people got hay fever in America, too, and I said yes. He then asked why. I was so dumbfounded I couldnโt answer. After a long silence and me staring in disbelief, someone said, โโฆthey have trees and flowers in America, too.โ
In order to properly speak a foreign language you sort of have to do an impression of a native speaker. The reason why most anglos are so bad at languages is because they are too self-conscious to effectively do this

I see how some people can watch flashy robot demos on the timeline and think with a shiver that the robot apocalypse is around the corner, but reality check:
There is no robot in the world that can change the batteries in a jack-o-lantern.
If you have a robot friendly door handle it might be able to walk outside, pick it up, and carry it back inside. The robot could open the drawer with your batteries in it, but then things get tough.
Opening the package of AA batteries?
Extracting a precision screwdriver from its case?
Unscrewing four tiny screws that require a hard press and twist?
Popping batteries out of the case?
Yes, you could build and train a specialist robot to do that today, but there is a very long way to go to replace the full range of human capabilities. Near term doomer scenarios should stop at โsecretly controlling humanityโ instead of โwiping humanity outโ ๐
Nope. Iโve never seen a nation that loves extremely bright neon white lights as much as Japan. Pics are avg living rooms.
Luxury hotels can give off very wrong impressions.
@omegasmash1 For you, what is the age cutoff at which a person who has dedicated themselves to a craft and is universally celebrated as a luminary in that field should be relegated to โold manโ status and no longer considered capable of offering meaningful insight into that discipline?
it is really interesting that Miyamoto's pragmatic take on ai in gamedev has seemingly softened many people's stance. i follow many talented pre-ai gamedevs on here that i have seen give very similar opinions only to get shouted down with "pick a side!" mob sentiment.
Miyamoto is not at all the first to ruminate on this kind of a future, but it feels like the pope just stepped into to settle a rift among the faithful.
i urge people to read his comments in whole. this is some of the best, thoughtful, pragmatic, non-inflammatory philosophizing i have seen and it comes from somebody with arguably the most clout in the industry.
Nintendoโs Shigeru Miyamoto, the acclaimed designer behind Super Mario and Zelda, has explained why he believes generative AI wonโt make human creativity obsolete.

@FarFromSubtle hi frash. for you, is it no art/music/writing gen, or are you wholly anti ai even for code?
As a musician I hate ai music, but as a programmer it's getting confusing trying to sus out everyones opinion on code gen and bug finding/fixing with the assistant stuff.
@tinkle_pit@THawkMedia so, let's make it clear what Sweeney is saying, extremely paraphrased, my understanding: "ai is here, it's not going to go away, it is foolish to not use it."
i don't hear anything in particular that counters that outright besides, as you said, being far more diplomatic.
