The "Sverd i Fjell" (Swords in Rock) monument in Hafrsfjord, near Stavanger, Norway 🇳🇴, commemorates the Battle of Hafrsfjord around 872 AD, where King Harald Fairhair unified Norway under a single crown.
Designed by sculptor Fritz Røed and unveiled by King Olav V in 1983, the monument features three bronze swords, each standing 10m tall, symbolizing peace, unity, and freedom. The largest sword represents King Harald, while the two smaller swords represent the defeated petty kings.
The hilts are modeled after Viking swords found in various parts of Norway, adding historical authenticity. Embedded into solid rock, the swords signify that they will never be used again, embodying the lasting peace following Norway's unification.
