"A Long Way Away": Boris Johnson's Geography-Driven Attack on the Chagos Handover to Mauritius
Geography is the point and it’s odd that Maldives is not on the table. https://t.co/lFiLUg8e8B
Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Sri Lanka as they confront the devastating impact of Cyclone Ditwah. My thoughts and prayers are with all those who have lost loved ones, their homes, and their livelihoods.
I am certain that the Maldivian people share your grief and sorrow during this difficult time.
We stand firmly with Sri Lanka as recovery and rebuilding efforts move forward, and I commend the tireless work of the authorities, first responders, and volunteers on the ground.
Sri Lanka is facing unusual extreme weather, with floods and high winds claiming lives, damaging property, and causing mass displacement. I pray for the safety of all our Sri Lankan friends. These events are a stark reminder of the growing impact of climate change, and we must all be more prepared for the escalating climate challenges that lie ahead. I am sure that the people and government of the Maldives, in whatever small measure we can be of assistance, will rise to the occasion in solidarity with Sri Lanka.
When Sri Lanka faced its financial crisis in 2022, the IMF approved a 4‑year Extended Fund Facility after months of negotiation. Yet the Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA) failed to account for climate shocks. With recent climate calamities, it is now impossible for Sri Lanka to stay aligned with the IMF programme.
The Climate Vulnerable Forum has long called for reforming the DSA to properly value resilience investments and natural capital, and for a reformed G20 Common Framework that includes automatic debt standstills in response to climate shocks. @KGeorgieva@POGourinchas@TheCVF #SriLanka #ClimateChange #DebtJustice #IMF #ClimateFinance #Resilience #GlobalSouth

A very happy birthday to His Majesty King Charles III. I wish the King all the best for the coming year, and look forward to continuing to support his important work on conservation. @RoyalFamily@UKinMaldives
The temperature in Maldives Velana airport is currently set at 15 degrees Celsius, which is excessively cold and wasteful. A more reasonable range would be between 20 and 25 degrees.
