Violence Spreads Like Contagion in Certain Groups

The dynamics of violence within certain groups mimic the spread of a contagious disease, with a new study revealing that violent actions conducted in groups significantly increase the likelihood of future violence.

The analysis delved into the criminal careers of nearly 10,000 convicted members of organized crime, uncovering a clear pattern: those who commit violent crimes alongside others are substantially more likely to repeat such actions.

This pattern of violent co-offending not only highlights the social contagion of violence but also suggests that the mafia's environment fosters a collective rationalization for violence, making it more acceptable and likely to recur.

The research, which provides a deep dive into the social structures that perpetuate violence in organized crime, calls for targeted interventions that disrupt these group dynamics to prevent future violent acts.
