The massive increase in petroleum prices will crush the already struggling public and further erode the purchasing power of ordinary citizens. It will trigger a fresh wave of inflation, causing transportation fares, electricity tariffs, food items, and other essential commodities to become even more expensive. Such a steep hike will place an unbearable burden on the middle class, lower-income groups, and daily wage earners. Instead of passing the entire economic burden onto the people, the government must review this decision, reduce unnecessary expenditures, and provide relief to the public, particularly in underdeveloped regions like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

The US has decided to permanently close its consulate in #Peshawar, once the closest diplomatic mission to #Afghanistan. Established in 1958 and later upgraded to Consulate General post in 2010, it symbolised the growing importance of US-Pakistan cooperation and people-to-people ties. A posting in Peshawar was considered highly prestigious, with several of those diplomats later becoming ambassadors in Islamabad. One is at a loss to figure out whether this closure is due to security concerns, Peshawar’s fading strategic importance or simply a move to save 7.5 million dollars annually? One also recalls the loss of the historic British Council Library, once a cherished intellectual hub of the city, which was closed after 9/11 and never reopened

#China’s continued efforts to bring #Pakistan and #Afghanistan to the negotiating table to resolve their disputes are highly appreciated and commendable. At a time when the ongoing conflict between #Iran and the #UnitedStates has already destabilized global #peace and heightened tensions across the region, the need for dialogue and diplomatic engagement has become even more critical. Pakistan has consistently urged #Kabul not to allow its territory to be used for cross-border terrorist activities, yet these concerns have so far not produced tangible results. It is hoped that China’s sustained engagement will help bridge the trust deficit between the two neighbours, promote reconciliation and détente, and encourage Afghanistan to reaffirm through concrete actions that its territory will not be used to launch attacks against neighbouring countries.
