Standard Bank has become the first African-based bank authorised by the People’s Bank of China to clear Chinese RMB:

— Standard Bank and ICBC will jointly operate as the “Renminbi Clearing Bank of Africa,” with RMB clearing capacity across 19 African countries.

— The approval follows Standard Bank’s November 2025 entry into China’s CIPS, enabling Africa-China interbank payments in RMB.

— RMB clearing status gives access to China’s onshore liquidity, capital markets and payments infrastructure.
