NEW from @FilipMedunic : How states are adapting to the age of geoeconomics — and how Germany can draw the right conclusions for its own approach.

NEW from @FilipMedunic: The US Treasury is preparing a screening mechanism for investments in China. German policymakers and businesses need to consider the debate about how Europe should react.

➡️#economicsecurity will be a central part of the next COM’s #newforeigneconmicpolicy
➡️#DeRisking not decoupling
➡️New economic security doctrine
But coordination will likely have to come from the very top!
3⃣ Neue Formate ... /1
My first piece for @dgapev on #exportcontrols scenarios in the 🇺🇸 and what 🇩🇪 can do (in DE). A strategic approach should focus on:
1. closing the gap with other 🇪🇺 member states
2. strengthening the 🇪🇺 Dual-Use Reg.
3. explore multilateral solutions

Together with @TGehrke_ we argue that focusing on de-risking is not enough. The next EU mandate should include:
1. A more proactive strategy beyond risk mitigation
2. A more (geo-)political and less siloed structure
3. A re-thinking of trade principles for critical supply chains

🔴 NEW policy brief | As the EU reestablishes the link between its security and economic policies, it should avoid focusing only on risk mitigation. It needs to upgrade its strategy to strengthen its geoeconomic position. By @TGehrke_@FilipMedunic

Happy to share our latest piece with my dear former colleague @TGehrke_ at @ecfr. What’s needed for #Europe to be ready for future geoeconomic challenges.

🇪🇺 accounts for 1/3 of 🇨🇳 EV exports, making it the most important export destination
But Europe needs more than tariffs if it wants to de-risk without strangling its green ambitions
With @FilipMedunic we wrote about elements for an 🇪🇺 EV strategy @ecfr
https://t.co/24F1dyaOuc
We look at the coming 🇪🇺🇨🇳 EV wars and Europe's de-risking troubles
A wider EU strategy should make use of its interdependencies with other economies, employ security tools to limit critical dependencies, and provide financial incentives to de-risk the most sticky dependencies
👋 Some personal news - I'm thrilled to announce that I've joined @ecfr as a senior policy fellow on geoeconomics, with a plan to take @ecfr's work on sanctions, de-risking, economic fragmentation and many other topics to the next level (yes, this will involve more cool graphs!)
So the 🇪🇺 agreed its 11th sanction package
The mechanism to punish countries that help evade sanctions was significantly watered down
@FilipMedunic and I argue for @ecfr that we need rules for the road before we move further down that sanctions path
https://t.co/BY0LklJHgC
With the 11th sanctions package the 🇪🇺 will likely enter deeper into the realm of secondary sanctions.
@FilipMedunic and I think there are serious risks down that path. Some basic principles should be agreed, therefore, before venturing onwards

With @TGehrke_ I've laid out three first principles to keep in mind for EU secondary sanctions - if they come!
1. Do not discriminate between targets
2. Share costs between partners
3. Limit them to critical goods
