Most people that I know who grew up in a nice suburban home did so because their parents overextended themselves financially to get them into the best public school possible (because you can borrow for housing, but not for private K-12 tuition). It’s that simple.
McMansion hate has gone so far now that anything nicer than a shotgun shack built since 1980 outside of NYC is considered an illegitimate dwelling for un-ensouled people.
At this point if you didn’t grow up rich in a metropolis or poor in the sticks, you’re seen as scum.
@BovrilG I will always love the casually dropped detail in Brideshead that Cordelia Flyte volunteered as a nurse in the Spanish Civil War on the *Nationalist* side.
@iacobus_p The other comments are being mean to you so I’ll just say the shirt is killer. I’d switch the sneakers for camp or blucher moccs and go for pants with a slightly less full cut.
Also, eyeglasses would suit your face very well, if you have any occasion to wear them.
The funny thing about comparisons between the stock market and the dating “market” is that the prior is that the stock market is utterly brutal so the comparison is grim.
I spend 50+ hours a week in contemplation of the stock market, and brother, it’s far kinder than dating.
my extended family’s 300-year-old house is being renovated in ugly ways. Quite sad, especially since only part of it is protected as a historic monument
@sapuo_x Afford ≠ willing to buy. A lot of older dudes never break out of the frugality box that served them well when they were young and hungry.
This is why it’s interesting when they do splurge, there’s often strong feeling associated with the object.
Older middle class dudes who own one material object that is a standard deviation or more above their economic status are always fascinating to talk to.
There is always a great story behind why Bob from accounting owns a Rolex Daytona or a Leica. Often passion or adventure.
@levrager Maybe, but not quite I think.
The reaction should be “holy shit, you own that” not “oh cool, you own that.”
Corvettes are still pretty attainable.
Just realized, perhaps very late, that the curtailment of European travel (no grand tours!) + increased mortality salience, both due to the Napoleonic Wars, were a big part of what made the Regency Era such a social and romantic hothouse and fertile ground for literature.
