[NEW REPORT]
As Turkey prepares to invade NES, closer scrutiny must be placed on its allies in Syria. A new report by RIC asks: Who are they? Where did they come from? Do they have their own political vision? And how do they fit into Turkey's domestic policy?
Anyways, I hope supporters of NATO expansion enjoy the precedent they’ve now set wherein a foreign autocrat can have a say in the domestic and foreign policy of democratically elected governments. Surely that will never cause problems.
What it will do:
- Citizens of Sweden and Finland, and Kurdish and Turkish refugees in Europe, lose rights.
- Erdogan gets a domestic political win and his belief that threats work is reinforced.
- Syrians likely lose humanitarian aid at a time when they desperately need it
This deal as written is not going to materially contribute to the outcome of a conflict that the second most powerful military in NATO has not been able to win for 40 years. Let’s get that out of the way. Nothing just changed on the ground.
Very bad day for democracy, freedom of assembly and speech, and conflict resolution; very good day for warmongering autocrats who want an even freer hand for transnational repression than Europe already gave them.

Great to see these Ukrainian leftists expressing solidarity with the Kurds, condemning Erdogan's genocidal attacks and criticising eurocentrist racism too (24 April post)!
Guterres to visit Turkey and meet with Erdogan, before going on to Moscow & Kyiv. Turkey described as a “valuable host for humanitarian talks”. Not one word on Turkey’s invasion of Iraq & attacks on NE Syria- both sovereign territories. Blatant hypocrisy!
