Still in shock. Beth Jacob Synagogue in Montpelier VT, is actually organising a fundraiser tomorrow to support Mohsen Mahdawi.

Mahdawi was one of the leaders in the Columbia student protests. He is facing deportation.

Mahdawi has a documented history of support for armed resistance. Supporting terrorists who murder Jews. Many of his family members were terrorists too.

And when I tried to warn the synagogue - I was attacked for it. And the leadership shut down all local discussion - because they did not want to hear anything that would stop their "full support" for Mahdawi.

This has nothing to do with Israel, Netanyahu or Trump. This is about them.

If a Jewish community cannot see that raising funds for a supporter of "violent Palestinian resistance" is over the line - then it is imploding from within, has completely lost its moral compass - and ultimately, is destined to fail.

The “Israel made us do it” argument is for podcast bros too stupid to imagine U.S. strategic interests in the Middle East that have nothing to do with Israel.

To be sure, Israel benefits from our involvement in defanging Iran, and yes, we can debate how close Iran was to arming its 2,500 km range missiles with nuclear warheads, but there is no debate about how catastrophic it would be to allow Iran to reach a point where it could plunge the entire region into chaos with a few well-placed missile strikes, not to mention its growing drone capabilities.

Again, I’m asking you to forget the existential threat to Israel for a moment and consider the national security risk presented by an anti-American Islamic theocracy aggressively attacking us through proxies while possessing the capability to plunge the U.S. and the world into a recession.

Most people have no clue that nearly 20 million barrels per day, about 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption, move through the Strait of Hormuz, that 20% of global LNG trade also transits Hormuz, or that the Suez Canal handles 12–15% of global trade.

Iran has a history of pushing the region toward the brink, including by arming proxies that attacked our troops and bases, while fielding missiles reported capable of a 2,500 km range.

Now imagine that same behavior backed by a nuclear deterrent or longer-range delivery systems. That would mean more proxy escalation, more coercion of shipping, higher odds of miscalculation, and our economy taking a major shock.

That is the definition of a national security threat. It may be comforting to believe we can simply withdraw from the Middle East and let events play out without consequences for our economy or the standard of living we’re unwilling to sacrifice, but the real world does not work that way. Maturity means accepting that.

Strive to understand the world as it is, not as you wish it were. Accept that there are no perfect solutions, only trade-offs.

NEW: It appears that all five Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee on Federal Courts will boycott today's committee hearing on the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood in US, arguing that they believe GOP will use it to scapegoat all Muslims. "Democrats have no intention of indulging this political creepshow," the Dems say in a joint statement.

The hearing, called by Senate Republicans and chaired by @SenTedCruz (R-TX), is titled "“Hidden in Plain Sight: Confronting the Muslim Brotherhood Network in America.” The Muslim Brotherhood promotes governance based on Islamic principles and several of its branches have been labeled as a terrorist organization. Last year, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on a senior leader of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood has had a presence in the US for decades.

You declared:

Your framing turned a basic civilizational expectation- that people do not riot and kill over ideas- into a magnanimous ethnic and religious favor.

That wasnot a slip of the tongue. It was a smug confession. In any functional liberal society, refraining from violence against a controversial speaker is not charity bestowed; it is the floor of the social contract.

By converting that floor into a gift from “a Muslim Palestinian president and a largely South Asian executive committee,” you implied the natural, expected behavior of the side with which you identified was lethal mob violence, and that its restraint was an act of noblesse oblige.

The audience’s applause confirmed the frame was shared, not aberrant.

The motion under debate concerned whether the West has rational grounds for suspicion of Islam as a political and cultural force. Your contribution was to demonstrate, in real time, that criticism of Islam or platforming of its critics requires special “protection” from a rioting crowd that would otherwise “cook” the speaker, and that this protection is best understood as Muslim generosity. The argument against suspicion becomes:

"trust us, we are kindly choosing not to let our people kill you today."

So kind.

That is the rhetorical equivalent of a protection racket congratulating itself for not burning down the shop.

This is not unique to one evening. It is the distilled form of a broader pattern in which much of the British Muslim constituency treats threats and physical intimidation as a legitimate extension of political disagreement, then demand credit for occasionally dialing it back.

When that credit is claimed in the name of a religious or ethnic identity during a debate about suspicion of that same identity, the circularity becomes grotesque. You did not say “the rule of law and basic decency prevented violence.” You said the identity of the leadership prevented it. Identity becomes both the source of the threat and the source of the restraint.

That is PRECISELY the dynamic that fuels suspicion: the sense that one is dealing not with individual citizens bound by shared rules, but with a communal power structure whose forbearance is conditional and self-congratulatory.

The moral inversion is complete.

Oxford Union’s pretensions make the episode especially rich. The society markets itself as a bastion of free speech, a place where difficult ideas are tested.

The ruthlessness of your self-own lies in its unintended clarity. No opponent of the motion needed to invent hypotheticals about parallel societies, blasphemy enforcement, or the differential application of norms.

You did it for them.

Your haughty, smug statement was not only a flagrant self-own. It is evidence of the veracity of the motion of debate:

“This House believes the West is right to be suspicious of Islam”

Indeed it is.

It's not alright to treat all religions as equally problematic, as if they all produce the same outcomes.

If someone worships a rat and practices rituals in private, who cares? That belief has no bearing on my life, no threat to my freedoms, no impact on society.

If someone worships a rat but happens to be a criminal, a dictator, or a warlord, yet his crimes are not driven by his rat-worshipping religion, then I still have no reason to blame his faith. His atrocities are his own.

But when a religion itself is responsible for evil, when its very doctrine commands violence, subjugation, and hatred, then ignoring its role is nothing short of suicidal.

Because if that religion didn’t exist, neither would the evils it produces.

Yes, Christians have done terrible things. But were their actions commanded by Christ? No.

Christianity does not tell them to kill, rape, or dominate.

The dark moments in Christian history were done in contradiction to Christ’s teachings, not in obedience to them.

Atheists have committed horrific atrocities, but atheism itself has no doctrine of conquest, no divine command to enslave or slaughter.

If a Jewish person commits an act of violence, was he motivated by Judaism? Was it a command in the Torah to do what he did? If not, then Judaism is irrelevant to his crime.

however, when a Muslim commits acts of terrorism, declares war on those who are different, rapes non-Muslim women, or subjugates others under Sharia law, is he acting against Islam’s teachings? No. He is following them.

When he beheads an infidel, he is obeying Quran 8:12: “Strike their necks.”

When he kills non-Muslims who refuse to submit, he is following Quran 9:29: “Fight those who do not believe in Allah.”

When he rapes non-Muslim women, he is doing what Muhammad and his own soldiers did, as permitted in Quran 4:24.

When he seeks to dominate and impose Islamic law, he is acting on Quran 9:33: “It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religion.”

When other religions are removed from society, the evils they are blamed for do not necessarily disappear.

But if Islam were removed, so would the terrorism, the jihad, the persecution of minorities, the religious tyranny.

So no, not all religions are the same. Some bring light, some bring darkness
