I grew up in Syracuse, New York, which was demolished by free trade in the same way Detroit was. I care because---shocking, I know---I'm not happy about my hometown turning into a rusted-out, crime-ridden junk heap over the course of 20 years because some CEOs wanted an extra vacation home.
Americans were lied to. The "service economy" failed. Those smelly, dirty, oh-so-terrible factory jobs were not replaced with high-paid white-collar work in the "information" field. Instead, the bulk of us are stuck working two or three crappy part-time jobs thanks to regulatory overreach like Obamacare or freelancing for less than minimum wage in the GIG! ECONOMY! Wow, neat, I get to spend 60 hours a week delivering burritos for Doordash for a fraction of what my dad made at my age. This was absolutely worth upending the country's entire economic structure for.
Look around you, retard. These are the fruits of free trade. We've turned America into the biggest, smelliest bazaar, full of pickpockets and thieves and annoying scammers shouting "BES DEAL SAAR". Meanwhile, Americans who've had their jobs stolen by Chinese slave labor are killing themselves with Chinese-made opioids because the same Con, Inc. whores who told them it was a good thing their jobs were sent overseas have no other solutions other than bucking up and dealing with it. Or move around endlessly in search of low-paid gig jobs (because THAT'S ALL THERE ARE), which is literally something the Soviets forced people to do (something to think about the next time some mulchbrain claims tariffs are "Marxist").
Every lifestyle philosophy in the post-Reaganomics world is cope to deal with our visibly declining quality of life. Move to a big city. You're just mad you can't get laid. Skill issue, saar. Stoicism itself was a cope popularized to deal with the decline of Rome. We are not declining. You are coping. Cope is dead, hope begins now.
We are going to reindustrialize America, crush China, and bring all these pissant countries to heel. It's already happening. And no, maybe you won't be working in a factory. But you might be the real estate agent selling a house to a factory worker, or the guy who owns the bar where he and his friends chill after work, or your wife teaches at the school where his kids go. Trump is the first president in decades who is opening up entire tranches of economic opportunity, real opportunity, rather than crushing them, restarting the virtuous cycle of economic growth in cities across America, as opposed to the parasitic pattern of wealth extraction to a handful of blue bugopolises while the rest of the country dies deaths of despair.
I watched, growing up, as GM, Carrier, and other pillars of the Syracuse economy departed one by one and the city turned into a hollowed-out shell as the "information economy" jobs mysteriously never arrived. Trump's tariff policy stands a chance of bringing my hometown back to life. Will it succeed? There's no guarantee. But the "service economy" didn't work and I'm not interested in goosing boomers' 401(k)s for a few more years while the rest of us suffer.
Tariffs worked for most of America's history. 40 years of free trade killed it. I know which side of history I'm on.
