The Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs @MiBeMa_2022 hosted a high-level consultative meeting with Coastal Leadership at PrideInn Paradise, Mombasa. On behalf of Hon. @HassanAliJoho , EGH, Cabinet Secretary Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, I apprised the leadership on the status of Kenya’s preparedness to host the 11th Our Ocean Conference (OOC), a landmark global forum on marine conservation, sustainable blue economy and climate action. The meeting was graced by His Excellency Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir @A_S_Nassir , Governor of Mombasa County; His Excellency Andrew Mwadime, Governor of Taita Taveta County; H.E. Major(Rtd) Dhadho Godhana, Governor of Tana River County; and Deputy Governor Josephat Chirema Kombo of Kwale County. Also present were Senators Juma Boy Juma (Kwale) and Mohamed Faki (Mombasa), Members of Parliament from Likoni, Kaloleni, Changamwe, Ganze, Kilifi, Mvita, and Rabai; my colleague Mr. Harry Kimtai @KimtaiHarry Principal Secretary State Department for Mining; as well as senior National Government officials and County Government representatives from across the Coast Region all united in support of Kenya’s historic role as the first African host of this prestigious conference.

The primary objective of the engagement was to brief the coastal leadership on the current progress of OOC11 preparations, including logistics, security, substantive programme development and stakeholder coordination, while also seeking their feedback, priorities and commitments. The Ministry listened carefully to the concerns and suggestions raised by H.E. Governors Abdulswamad and Mwadime and the broader coastal leadership, particularly on the role of counties in the conference delivery, the involvement of local communities and artists, and the need for clearer guidance on county-level responsibilities.

Moving forward, the Ministry and Coastal Leadership reaffirmed their commitment to forging a united front and deepening collaboration as Kenya gears up to host the most successful and impactful Our Ocean Conference ever. Coastal counties will be actively integrated into the national planning structures, ensuring that the Coast Region plays a central role in showcasing Kenya’s blue economy achievements, mobilising commitments, and inspiring global action for our oceans.
