I read a post where someone lamented that Muslim students in Catholic schools are required to attend Catholic Masses.

I think this issue deserves a little more nuance.

First, a Catholic school is not simply an academic institution that teaches Mathematics and English. It is an apostolate and ministry of the Catholic Church. Its mission is to form the whole person - mind (intellectually), character (morally), spirit (spiritually), and (body) socially. That education does not simply end in the four walls of the classrooms, it continues also in the Mass which is at the heart of Catholic school's identity.

At the same time, even though all students in a Catholic school, irrespective of their faith, attend the Holy Mass, no one is ever be forced to become a Catholic against his or her conscience. The Mass attendance is simply part of the school's communal life and formation.

Third, every institution has the right to preserve its identity. Just as an Islamic school has the right to organize its life around Islamic worship and values, a Catholic school has the same right to organize its life around the Mass and Catholic teaching. Religious freedom protects not only individuals but also religious institutions.

Fourth, parents make a free choice when they enroll their children in a Catholic school. No one is compelled to do so. With that choice comes an understanding that the school's ethos - including prayer, liturgy, and religious formation - forms part of the educational environment. Catholic formation is part of Catholic education.

I personally know many parents from other faith traditions who specifically choose Catholic schools for their children because they value the discipline, moral formation, academic excellence, and strong values that Catholic Religious education provides. They understand that these qualities are inseparable from the Catholic identity of the school, of which the celebration of the Mass is an essential part.

Lastly, I think what is needed is mutual respect. Catholics should never suppress the sincerely held beliefs of non-Catholic students. Likewise, those who freely choose a Catholic institution should respect its mission and traditions. Diversity is best served not by asking every institution to abandon its identity, but by allowing each to live its identity while treating everyone with dignity and respect.

In Catholic schools, we do formation and not conversion. And if a school is free to be authentically Catholic, its Catholic formation cannot be separated from its Catholic education.

■차붐이 박지성에 대해 쓴 글
-2014년 박지성 은퇴 당시 그가 쓴 글이다.
-차붐의 죄책감과 미안함이 절절히 담겨 있는 진심 어린 글.
-이런 마음을 가진 축구인들이 많아져야 한국 축구는 살아날 것이다.

지성이가 은퇴를 합니다. 아니 한다고 합니다. 많은 생각을 했습니다. 나는 53년에 태어났습니다. 환갑이 별로 많이 남지 않았습니다. 무엇을 했는지 생각했습니다. 부끄럽습니다. 연평도에서 우리 해병 두 명이 세상을 떠났을 때, 나는 정말 미안했습니다. 그래서 얘기했던 기억이 납니다. 분단의 아픔을 물려주어서 미안하다고...

그런데 지성이가 은퇴를 한다고 하는 상황은 당연히 해야하는 책임을 다하지 못한 나 자신의 무능과 무책임함이 그 배경에 있기 때문에 어렴풋이 느끼는 미안함이 아니라 가슴속에 뭔가가 콕 박혀들어오는 아픔으로 다가왔습니다. 무릎에 물이 많이 차는 모양입니다. 무릎을 너무 많이 쓴 것이 그 이유입니다. 그것도 무리하게 어려서부터.

분데스리가 생활을 마치고 돌아왔을 때, 나는 기회가 있을 때 마다 자주 얘기했습니다. 초등학교 어린이들이 유럽의 프로선수들 처럼 무라히게 훈련하면 안되는 문제점을. 초등학교 선수가 기초공부 조차도 하지않고 축구만 하는 나라. 10세도 안되는 선수들도 하루에 세번씩 프로선수들 처럼 훈련을 하는 현실. 정말 가슴이 답답할 정도로 걱정스러웠습니다.

내가 그럴만한 힘을 가지지도 못했지만, 나는 이런 문제들을 적극적으로 바꾸려고 나서지 조차도 않았습니다. 그저 어린이 축구교실을 만들어 즐겁게 축구하는 방법도 있다는 것을 알려준 게 겨우 내가 한 일이었습니다. 그 동안 합숙을 하던 어린 선수들이 불에 타서 세상을 떠나고 지도자에게 맞아서 세상을 떠난적도 있습니다. 우리 아이들이 경험하고 있는 축구는 너무 거칠고 비인간적인 경우가 상당히 많습니다. 잊을만 하면 터지는 축구계 비리는 어린 선수들이 배우는 세상 역시 건강하지 못하다는 얘기입니다. 그러나 나는 아무것도 하지 않았습니다.

그저 공개적으로 글을 써서 몇마듸 하는게 고작이었습니다. 당연히 바꾸어 져야하고 너무 오래된 악습이기 때문에 강력한 방법이 없이는 변화를 할 수 없음을 알면서도 나는 내가 그 일을 하고 싶지는 않았습니다. 욕먹고 싸우고 오해받고... 내가 입어야 하는 이런 상처들을 '꼭 해야할 일' ,'한국 축구에 꼭 필요한 변화'와 바꿀 만큼 나는 용기가 없었습니다. 그 결과 오늘, 우리가 그토록 아끼고 자랑스러워 하던 최고의 선수를 겨우 30살에 국가대표에서 은퇴시키는 안타까움 앞에서 멍하게 바라만 보고 있는 것입니다.

지난핸가, 지성이가 어딘가에서 스피치를 하면서 우리나라 처럼 맞으면서 축구를 하는 나라는 없다고 했던 기억이 납니다. 많은 얘기를 할 수 있었을 터인데 유독 그 얘기를 햇습니다. 어린 선수들이 그들의 신체적 한계를 넘어서기를 강요당하면서 축구를 합니다.

히딩크 감독 때, 선수들의 상태를 체크한 결과 대표팀에서 무릎 발목 상태가 온전한 선수는 두리뿐이라고 했던 기억이 납니다. 당시 팀닥터가 내게 직접 한 말입니다. 두리는 초등학교 축구부 과정이 없이 중학교에 가서야 한국식 축구를 했던 선수였습니다. 내가 축구를 오래 할수 있었던 것 역시 몸관리를 철저하게 했던 이유도 있지만 중학교 3학년이 되서야 축구를 정식으로 시작한 것도 그 이유가 될수도 있을 겁니다. 혹사당하지 않고 유소년기를 보낼수 있었던...

그동안 내가 한국축구를 사랑한다고 말하고 스스로 믿어왔습니다. 그러나 지성이의 은퇴는 나에게 묻습니다. "한국축구를 아끼고 사랑한다고? 그래서? 후배들에게 해준게 뭔데?" 나의 용기없음이 비겁함이 부끄럽습니다.
