Death of a chalk stream - the Dever today at Stoke Charity in Hampshire. If things don’t change it is going to be dry all the way down to Bullington by September. Not only do we lose the insects and wild fish but the whole food chain. A precious wild brown trout gone for ever.
Was interesting to walk the route through the crop, cut for the water main that will soon run under this field between #shepreth and #barrington - a route near to the public footpath and close to where the river once flowed?
Spent a lovely day yesterday filming this primordial critters, Brook Lamprey! 300 million years old and so bizarre we are more closely related to a salmon then it is! Thanks to @RobMungovan for the help! @theriverstrust@BBCSpringwatch@wwf_uk@WWTworldwide
Cue the Barry White as things are getting heated in the river today. When a male brown trout comes up to the side of the female he shakes to encourage her to lay the eggs. @WildTroutTrust @SalmonTroutCons
Trout fan @jeremysallis here's a vid from RSPB Fowlmere 28Dec. The hen cuts the bed to ensure the gravel is just right for her eggs to rest safe in through the winter months before emerging as tiny fish (fry) in March. Expecting more action soon @WildTroutTrust@JackPerksPhoto
And in the River Shep, wild brown trout do what they do best, they spawn amongst clean gravel to ensure the river has many trout fry for the coming spring @WildTroutTrust@ForShep@OuseEcologyEA@Cambswater
@Macrolunchtimes @Feargal_Sharkey@holland_tom@Twitter You would be very welcome. Start at source in RSPB Fowlmere, through Shepreth, and end at Barrington where the Shep enters the Rhee/Cam @RobMungovan
3rd day back after furloughed v pleased to be delivering new habitat for trout. 80T of gravel going into the River Mel for new spawning habitat and new margins for water voles. Sadly no volunteers used so placement by grab lorry and digger. @WildTroutTrust@OuseEcologyEA
Over the past 20 years this moment has come very rarely on the @RiverChess, we have good flow in the river thanks to above normal groundwater and there is no sewage being dumped into the river. Here are a few photos of the stretch of river between Latimer and Chenies.
