Priest, father, broken human being, terrible squash player and Worcestershire cricket fan. Padre in the British Army. “Not completely socially awkward”
@Tyrxes@johnmilbank3 It's too difficult a book for you. You wouldn't be able to manage it.
Don't try and buy a copy from Amazon and read it, it would overwhelm you.

Chaplain Noel Duckworth was a man of charisma. Though small in stature at 5ft 2" he was a man and a Chaplain of immense belief and dedication to his fellow soldiers.
Born in 1912 in Yorkshire, At University of Cambridge he coxed for his College in a boat race and went on to represent Great Britain at the 1936 Olympics in rowing.
At the outbreak of war he was already a priest and went on to join the 2nd Battalion The Cambridgeshire Regiment stationed in Singapore. As Singapore fell he had an opportinty to leave but chose to stay with the wounded and men who he served with.
On his capture the group he was with were ordered by the Japanese to be killed, Padre Duckworth was having none of it, he stepped forward and started to berate the Japanese Officer and his men a proper parade ground telling off. The Japanese Officer recognised him as a fellow Olympian as he had also represented Japan at rowing.
This was not the end of Padre Duckworth beligerence and standing up for his men. This set the pattern for his actions throughout the war getting constant severe beating for ensuring the men were treat properly. his belief never wavered.
He would use his charisma to trade food and medical supplies from the Japanese Guards. He was held in the highest esteme by his fellow POWs for the constant standing up for what was right.
After the war he left the Army to work in Ghana before returning to Cambridge to become the first Chaplain of the new Churchill College. @ArmyChaplainMus@ArmyChaplaincy

Ever since I bought @Tyrxes a @MapleLeafs hoodie she's been obsessed by ice hockey and has been trying to teach me how it works.
My favourite bit is when one of the players has to go and sit on the naughty step for 5 minutes.
From medieval monks to modern pub ministry, Rev. Fergus Butler-Gallie argues that Christianity and alcohol have always gone hand in hand, and says some of his most effective work as a vicar happens over a pint in the pub ⤵️

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
@FrGary1@MadsDavies@McCrimmons I’ve had someone resign from the PCC rather than undergoing safeguarding training (“at my age, Richard, I don’t want to spend my time doing things like that”)
Underrated life advice: Have more hobbies and fewer opinions. Learn an instrument. Plant a garden. Build something with your hands. Cook. Paint. Run. The happiest people I know spend less time debating life and more time actually living it.
"If we lose test cricket, we will lose the cricket we truly know. History remembers legendary test careers not franchise triumphs. Cricket without Tests has no real meaning. Winning a T20 World Cup may put you at the centre of world cricket today, but whether that is truly good for the game remains open to debate.
Test cricket earned its name because it challenges every quality a player possesses, technique, patience, temperament, endurance and character. It is not simply about clearing the ropes for entertainment; It is about battling through pressure, adapting to conditions, and surviving the physical and mental demands of five intense days"

We've been conducting a major @NATO exercise in London this week - and no one above ground suspected a thing.
