En médiane, les pensions en Belgique illustrent déjà une forte différence selon le statut.

Un fonctionnaire régional, par exemple au SPW ou dans des administrations comparables, perçoit généralement une pension nette de l’ordre de 2 500 à 3 200 € par mois après une carrière complète. Le système repose sur une logique collective, indexée et relativement prévisible.

Un directeur général du Service public régional de Bruxelles, comme Jean-Paul, se situe encore au-dessus : sa pension peut atteindre environ 4 000 à 5 500 € bruts par mois. Une retraite confortable, financée par un système public mutualisé, et présentée comme l’expression de la solidarité.

Face à cela, un indépendant, même après une carrière complète, se retrouve souvent autour de 1 100 à 1 500 € net par mois. Il doit en parallèle financer lui-même sa retraite via l’épargne, l’investissement et le risque personnel, sans garantie de rendement ni protection contre les cycles économiques.

L’écart est donc structurel : de 800 à plus de 2 000 € net par mois selon les profils.

Si l’on traduit cet écart en capital, cela représente environ 400 000 à 1,2 million d’euros à constituer soi-même pour espérer compenser la différence de niveau de vie à la retraite.

C’est ici que la notion de “solidarité” devient intéressante.

Jean-Paul parle de solidarité, souvent en défendant davantage de taxation et de redistribution. Mais la question devient plus concrète lorsqu’on regarde le système dans son ensemble :
qui finance réellement cette solidarité ?

Est-ce l’indépendant ou le salarié du privé, qui travaille, épargne, prend des risques et contribue massivement au financement du système ?
Ou est-ce Jean-Paul, dont la retraite et la sécurité reposent largement sur cette contribution collective, tout en défendant parfois un renforcement de la charge qui pèse sur ceux qui la financent ?

Au fond, la question n’est pas de savoir si la solidarité existe, mais dans quel sens elle circule réellement :

The Spanish government announced a plan to recruit cheap labor by offering residency to 500,000 illegal immigrants currently in the country. The plan has a few weak points -- for instance, the fact that these failed asylum-seekers are overwhelmingly young males from the most dangerous and unstable parts of the world.

The Spanish government has no idea about the background or even the identity of many of these men. And, it turns out, Spain didn't even know how many were in the country. Current projections are that over a million migrants will register, and then come the inevitable requests for "family reunification".

Northern European countries are quietly furious with Spain for this decision. The Spanish economy is doing reasonably well by southern European standards, which are low, but certainly won't generate enough unskilled-labor posts to absorb all of these men.

Hundreds of thousands will thus move north to France, and then to Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden -- actually no, who are we kidding? They'll head straight for Germany, where they will be guaranteed bed, board, and €450 walking-around money simply for continuing to breathe, no matter what their legal status. The Netherlands and the Scandi/Nordic countries have significantly tightened their laws on illegal immigrants, and migrants know this. Germany hasn't, because the Social Democrats are junior partners in the ruling coalition and block any serious reform.

Spain won't want to stop this northen migration and probably can't. A government which didn't even know how many illegals lived on its territory hardly has the administrative capacity to prevent them from leaving, especially as the EU still largely lacks internal borders. Besides, why would Spain want to keep the ≈300K? migrants who turn out to be unemployable within its borders, where they'll just become drug dealers, junkies, and petty criminals? Let Germany deal with them.

One of Sanchez's motives for this reckless move was political grandstanding, to showcase himself as the European anti-Trump. But it won't be Spain that bears the brunt of the Sanchez-wave, it will be good old Germany. As usual.
