I am so excited to announce my first-ever paper! Read it here: https://t.co/rub8e83IkZ
I want to thank my supervisor Peter Kotanen for all his expertise and support as well as my lab mates @vicki_mzhang and Brianna Wong for their never-ending support in and out of the field.
Will I ever post anything related to my research? Probably not.
Anyways, this mother polar bear & cub crossed the road ~10m in front of our vehicle. This was very very close - they kept coming towards us & we backed up. Mother had blood on her legs.
Videos from BI0332 students.
Super proud of @FrannieSilva, who defended her MSc & passed!!!! 🎓✨
I had the best time working with her not only in Churchill @ChurchillNSC, but also at @ksr_jokershill, & in the @UTMBiology department 🫶🏼 it’s the end of an era, but I’m excited for your future!

Full house for the session 3 talks at #Atwood2023! First up @FrannieSilva of Kotanen Lab discussing the influence of shelter in the establishment of the invasive dandelion.
This study was led by Omer, an undergrad @UTMBiology thesis student. He was incredibly meticulous in IDing all the species that emerged from the collected soil.
Thanks also to @FrannieSilva for helping with soil collection, & @ChurchillNSC for all the research support.
New paper out in @cdnsciencepub!
In Churchill, Manitoba, soil is constantly moved around for construction & roadside repairs, which can disperse seeds! We document the movement of viable native & invasive seeds in the seed bank.

Meet Francine Silva!
Francine is a second year masters student in the Kotanen Lab and she is super excited to serve as this year's EEB Rep! For all the EEBer's at UTM, make sure to get to know Francine; she's super friendly and doesn't bite!
this field season, we:
set up 3 experiments, added >34000 seeds, transplanted 1170 invasive plants, surveyed 1000s of dandelions, monitored invasive species for 12 weeks in the tundra & boreal forest, & taught an Arctic field course w 4 student projects

sad I’m missing #CSEE2022/#ESA2022 & experiencing some FOMO, but it’s okay because I’m in the middle of my busiest field season yet. Collecting lots of data to talk about @ next year’s meeting!
