In 1855, a young enslaved black woman named Celia killed a white man who raped her.
A Missouri judge stated that an slave woman had no right to refuse her “master.” She was later convicted of murder and hanged.
To overcome racial inequality, we must confront history.
—Celia was tried, convicted, and ultimately executed for killing her owner. Celia confessed: She had tried to put a stop to what had been five years of sexual abuse. At the center of the trial was a dramatic confrontation over the legal standing of enslaved women. Did an enslaved woman have the right to defend herself against sexual assault?
Drawing on Celia’s own words, her court-appointed defense team said “yes.”
Prosecutors, the trial judge, jurors, and the state high court all rejected Celia’s claim.
Enslaved women did not have the same right to self-defense accorded to free women under Missouri law, they concluded.
To allow such resistance would have been to strike at the heart of slaveholders’ power. It also would have recognized the legal personhood, honor, and rights of enslaved women, undermining slavery’s legitimacy.
In subsequent years, legislators and jurists in other slave states made more explicit that sexual coercion of slaves was not a crime. It is this state sanctioned sexual assault that is a baneful legacy of slavery. Even today, it contributes to erroneous ideas about black women as lacking honor and “virtue,” making them especially vulnerable to sexual abuse.
When I saw Baroness @ShaistaGohir's questions in the House of Lords about @TellMamaUK, which has received £7m to monitor anti-Muslim incidents and support victims, I wanted to know more. So I reached out. /4 https://t.co/YEn2YY4GUM
🧵EXCLUSIVE: They tried to kill my @BylineTimes story. They failed: Govt's flagship anti-Muslim hatred monitor underreports anti-Muslim hate crimes by 90%+ while paid millions in public funds. And paying some of those funds to threaten libel litigation /1 https://t.co/rjcLJgP4gw
The wonderful work of Leigh Bowery.
This outfit from 1984 was made from floral and snake-skin prints and ruffles - designed to be worn by any model. Its fantastical outline and mix of different styles addresses preconceptions of gender, sexual identity and the creation of self image.
Bowery did not call themselves a fashion designer, however it became one of the first expressions of their creativity. This outfit was one of only a handful to survive, modelled at a fashion show in Tokyo organised by Susanne Bartsch.
Bowery also sat for several paintings and etchings for Lucian Freud - currently included in a new display in our Prints and Drawings Room 90.
Unfollowing, Blocking, and/or Muting someone does NOT mean we have beef. It means I’m uninterested in what you post and I’d rather not see it. Why would you take that so fucking personally? Check that parasocial relationship at the door, wash your face and go outside.
I am closing my @bookingcom account. FOR GOOD. The same booking is being compromised, my number has been stolen. https://t.co/5VWTCkBTui cannot give any valid reason WHY this is happening. I’ve had an app email, one direct to my inbox & 2 Whatsapp today from scammers in India🤬
