Growing up behind the Iron Curtain, the United States was a symbol of freedom, hope, and everything we longed for under totalitarian rule.

Now, watching what’s happening under Donald Trump and his movement, it feels like I’m seeing echoes of the very regimes we fought to escape.

You may not see it from the inside, but to those of us who lived through fascism and communism, the warning signs are unmistakable.

The contempt for the rule of law.
The normalization of lies.
The vilification of the press.
The demonization of opponents.
The cult of personality.
The flirtation with violence.

We’ve seen this movie before—and we know how it ends.

Please don’t underestimate what’s happening. America was our dream. Don’t let it become our nightmare.
