Bobby Tambling started England’s last home game before the 1966 World Cup, playing outside left in the 2-0 friendly win over Yugoslavia on May 4. Almost scored with a volley. Tambling then named in Alf Ramsey’s provisional squad of 28 to train at Lilleshall. Cut from the squad on June 18 as Ramsey finalised his 22 but told to remain on standby, and keep training at Chelsea in case needed. Yugoslavia proved Tambling’s third and final cap. But he'd played a role in England’s World Cup build-up. RIP.
