BBC people - something I've learned... you get what you tolerate.

And I hope that everyone currently facing a tough time in BBC local radio start to consider this fact as they weight up moves.

Yes, if you stay quiet and accept mistreatment, you *might* get offered work scraps.

But do you WANT to work for these kinds of people?

Wouldn't you rather find yourself working in a place that:

Values you?
Respects you?
Rewards you?
Appreciates you?
Provides feedback and constructive criticism to you?
Develops you?
Encourages you?
Doesn't threaten you?
Resists attempting to manipulate you?

I've been where you are more than once.
Admittedly in the commercial sector, not the BBC.
But it's the same situation.

Facing the prospect of losing a career I'd wanted since childhood.

Here's where the power lies.

If you're willing to 'lose everything'...

(you won't because you currently don't have anything TO lose apart from a dangled carrot)

...to stand up for what you believe in, and those around you, that makes you more powerful than them.

It enables you to take bigger risks, and effect bigger changes.

YOU are the ones who connected with their audiences, not THEM.

And YOU have the power to leverage that audience to take away THEIR power.

I'm not suggesting you go out of your way to be difficult and create a massive outcry.

But you CAN be vocal about it, explain what's happening publicly, and have your listeners on your side.

Bosses don't like dealing with stuff when it's not their problem, especially when they have gimps who can easily handle everything for them 'in house'.

So MAKE IT their problem.

Once upon a time I couldn't imagine doing anything but radio.

Now, I can't imagine ever doing radio again.

And one day that will be you, too.

So why not make a difference now, while you still can.

Organise yourselves as a collective, and stand up for each other.

Together, you have more clout than ANYONE at the BBC.

Just look at Gary Lineker...
