On #TransDayOfVisibility, we celebrate trans people and their achievements, and recommit to combatting institutional transphobia.
I wanted to take the opportunity to give a shout out to a few trans and non-binary people - authors, artists and activists - who inspire me.

Furness Young Labour will always welcome commitments to make the world a safer place for our trans siblings, but this is impossible without first making our party a safe and accepting place. Without making this change, our policies are meaningless. Our promises are empty.

The Labour Party will always be committed to building a society where the trans community feel safe and respected.
Labour will:
🏳️⚧️ Introduce tougher sentences for LGBT+ hate crime
🏳️⚧️ Ban conversion therapy in all forms
🏳️⚧️ Modernise the outdated Gender Recognition Act
Transphobia has no place in our society. We all recognise this, so why do we allow transphobia to exist within our party? Anyone seeking to represent the Labour Party - at any level - should share in our basic Labour values: we are all equal and we all deserve respect.

However, the Labour vote in Barrow and Furness was still strong and Chris had overwhelming support.
We agreed that Erica Lewis would be our second preference. Erica has a brilliant campaigning record and has been a long-standing supporter of our branch.
At a recent meeting, Furness Young Labour members met to discuss the prospective parliamentary candidates for our constituency.
It was unanimously agreed that Chris Altree for Barrow and Furness is the most suitable candidate to stand for election in Barrow and Furness.
We are particularly grateful to Chris for his support in establishing the branch and for campaigning alongside us on various youth issues.
Chris was our candidate in 2019. He fought a difficult campaign which was ultimately decided by national issues.
LGBTQ+ History Month provides us with the opportunity to pause and remember why we can’t go back to how things used to be, why we have to stand together in solidarity and keep moving forward.

2023 marks 20 years since the repeal of Section 28, the law that banned the promotion of homosexuality in the UK. A law that was an attack on the very idea of LGBTQ+ visibility.
There are sections of the community that continues to be attacked.

Our thoughts go out to Brianna Ghey’s family and all those who loved her, following the devastating news of her death. She was 16 years old.
If you have any information regarding her death we urge you to contact the police.
May she rest in peace.
School teachers, civil servants, university staff, train drivers - we stand with you in your fight. Solidarity, today and always.
Please continue to show your support with striking workers! ✊

The owners of the new Cumbrian coal mine are a private equity firm based in the tax haven CAYMAN ISLANDS.
The coal will be used to make steel despite the UK's steel industry not wanting it - 85% will be exported.
Who exactly does this mine benefit?!
