A few weeks into my residency, what has struck me the most is how supportive the culture is here. Too often in medicine and academics we trade good culture for reputation or vice versa. Grateful to be at a program where both are valued.

🚨 @ASCO Abstract 1535:

Many people with #cancer will experience a neutropenic fever over the course of their care journey. Traditionally, this requires a lengthy hospital stay while awaiting count recovery. This decreases patients’ quality of life, increases the cost of care for patients and health systems, forces delays in care, and limits the quantity of time patients are able to spend outside the hospital doing the things they love. At @MayoClinic @MayoCancerCare, we built a program to change that.

Introducing the “DEFeNDR” program - an innovative remote patient monitoring (#RPM) system designed to facilitate safe and effective outpatient management and give time back to our patients. And that’s just the beginning.

I am beyond proud to present the first glimpse of this work at #ASCO23. We show that patients participating in the program spend less time in the hospital. In addition, when readmitted, patients using the program experience shorter length of stay and lower rates of intensive care unit utilization.

✅ in microcytic anemia, ferritin of < 30 = iron deficiency. If ferritin > 30 w/o inflammation, unlikely iron deficiency, look for other causes
