Part of this project has been to develop a range of resources to support people to have conversations with diverse South Asian communities and other communities about Advance Care Planning.

The voluntary sector can’t tackle these inequities alone.

Meaningful attention + investment is needed (national + local) to provide culturally + linguistically appropriate info/support to people to consider their EOL wishes, plan ahead + participate in shared decision-making.

The recommendations detail ways to improve conversations about people’s end of life wishes and increase opportunities for advance care planning.

Underpinning all this is the importance of understanding and respecting what matters to each person as an individual.

The project showed (as in other minoritised ethnic groups) South Asian communities face inequities in access to ACP + support at the end of life. There's a clear urgent need to offer people opportunities to consider + make informed decisions about preparing for their end of life.

Many people did not understand end-of-life care terms and how decisions are made if someone lacks capacity.

This led to people feeling alienated from their loved ones’ treatment and care decisions.

People told us repeatedly that they face significant challenges when talking to doctors, finding and understanding information, making treatment and care decisions and accessing support.

In 2022, we launched an 18 month project funded by @TNLComFund.

We co-produced advance care planning workshops aiming to create a safe space for South Asian elders of all faiths to talk more openly about death and dying and plan ahead should they want to do this.

Today we’re sharing what we learnt working alongside @subcotrust + @GGC_Bristol.

We make recommendations we believe are fundamental to good care.
