"To change something, build something that makes the old model obsolete." We have to find new ways to make our way of living work! https://t.co/SAKf8UCZI4 #Lesson12
#Lesson12 mentioned the Mt. Pinatubo volcano explosion. It's crazy to see what went on in 1991 regarding the evacuation and explosion. https://t.co/yYUuNJoRmG
@melgendreau It does annoy me that going green energy-wise means probably spending more money up front to reap benefits that are supposed to be long term. My bulbs started going out and it was 4 halogen bulbs that cost the same as 1 LED bulb. Sad!
@kathrynphys273 Haha, I always thought clotheslines looked super charming. This is a dumb question, but how did they get the clothes out to the middle of the line if the line is in between buildings? I always wondered what the process was for neighborhoods with clotheslined buildings
@Phys273Hamdi Yup, this is expected bc ppl and corporations just do not want to let go of natural gas as an energy source! humans are stubborn that way. Change is scary when you've been doing something the same way for a century.
@Deenosaurr15 I think that's a great trait of being a scientist. Science as an industry is always willing to admit when things have changed whenever there's significant new data to challenge what was previously known. A good scientist won't let their ego get in the way of facts!
@JueRuChen1@Phys273Hamdi@clau_royea@adrielsaya@Arianne_PHYS273 It's hard for big car brands to take on electric car initiatives bc almost everybody wants to stay in the fossil fuel business. :/ Make more electric cars for ppl to buy and all of a sudden the gasoline industry tanks and there's a HUGE problem for a lot of car companies.
@LucaP94 The only thing is Canada is a muuuch bigger country with different trash output and also different needs. I think Sweden was in a special position as a country to be able to do this.
@LucaP94 Swedes working towards a 100% recycle rate of household waste. Even IMPORTING garbage into the country to convert into energy. Revolutionary. #Lesson7
@SamScenna That's a great way to put it. Yes, health nuts are always raving about "chemicals in their food." Well, sometimes there are good chemicals! And like, everything is made out of chemicals! lol Nuclear needs to get its reputation back
Saw this comment posted on a YT vid: "You cannot be for green power and against nuclear power." A bold statement, but I see what they're getting at! Nuclear power seems a better alternative than fossil fuels, that's for sure. No energy source is perfect. Debate? #Lesson8
@han_boyi On the subject of plastic, I saw this really sad video of a turtle with a very long straw stuck deep into its nose. Rescuers luckily pulled it out, but it was so heartbreaking to see it suffer :(
@TA_Andrew_P273 @Sehwan89 Yeah, this makes a lot of sense. I've never spent a summer in Montreal so I don't know how hot it gets here — all I know is that air conditioners are less common here than in California because it's so cold most of the time. Hope I don't die with just a measly fan this June.
@amanda_phys273@frank_canuto I'm super grateful to have alternative hot water to a hot water tank though! The hot water tank takes forever to fill up again after its been used but when water is heated on the spot it never runs out! Only thing is the energy it uses to heat the water :/
@asandhu003 It's so weird, I know that the earth is round and that San Francisco is closer to China than displayed in the map but I would have never thought that China's air pollution was affecting the U.S. across an ocean!
@adrielsaya @tbird_phys273 @Arianne_PHYS273@Phys273Hamdi It's honestly super interesting to see how capitalism works — a plus is how fast technology can develop under it with someone like Elon Musk. Electric cars were a fancy 25 years ago and now all of a sudden we all might be able to afford a Tesla lol
@madison_ramsay2 Oh man, I didn't know Bill had a brand new show for adults on Netflix! Well, I suppose the "adults" he's teaching now about climate change were the kids he was teaching way back when his show first aired. But now we have more responsibility to vote lol #Lesson11#90skid
@Deenosaurr15 @ed_gag I guess we have to remind ourselves that this stuff is gonna happen :( It sucks that species are going extinct and I don't want to sound apathetic but I suppose that's just life. Maybe we can convince people to help keep animals around longer by caring more. #Lesson11
@TA_Andrew_P273 Yeah, I think the biggest thing individuals can do personally is cut back on transport emissions. The other stuff, although I do know can make a difference, seems almost insignificant compared to the damage corporations do to the environment #Lesson11
I've read arguments that civilians doing what they can to protect the earth (not using straws, cars, etc) is over-marketed to hide the fact that corporations are the true dangers to the environment. I wouldn't say that our daily efforts are futile, but what do u think? #Lesson11
