Dharmendra Pradhan Ji began his public life as a student activist, fighting for students’ rights. Even as a young leader, he stood with students demanding justice, including against question paper leaks. That concern for students stayed with him throughout his public life.

When the examination crisis happened, he took full responsibility. He did not take the easy way out. He stayed, accepted responsibility, got the guilty arrested, ensured the re-examination was conducted in record time so that students did not lose an academic year, initiated systemic reforms, and set the examination system on the path towards computer-based testing.

For me, he has always been a Minister who was accessible, positive and deeply responsive. Even recently, he helped expedite the long-pending deemed university status for Mount Carmel College upon my request. He immediately understood what it meant for thousands of students and ensured the matter moved forward.

Politics is often unforgiving. Years of sincere work can sometimes be overshadowed by one difficult chapter. But his contributions - from the rollout of Ujjwala Yojana to implementing the National Education Policy, which will shape India’s education system for decades - will endure.

ज्येष्ठ नेते, राज्याचे माजी मंत्री दत्ताभाऊ मेघे यांच्या निधनाची बातमी मनाला खोलवर वेदना देणारी आहे. त्यांच्या जाण्याने विदर्भाच्या सामाजिक, शैक्षणिक आणि राजकीय जीवनाशी घट्ट नाळ जुळलेले एक सर्वसमावेशक व्यक्तिमत्त्व हरपले आहे.

लोकसभा, राज्यसभा आणि विधानपरिषदेतून त्यांनी सातत्याने जनतेचा आवाज प्रभावीपणे मांडला. पदापेक्षा माणुसकीला अधिक महत्त्व देणारे त्यांचे व्यक्तिमत्त्व हेच त्यांचे खरे वैभव होते. आयुष्यभर त्यांनी जपलेला सेवाभाव आणि दातृत्वाचा वारसा असंख्य लोकांच्या आयुष्यात प्रकाश निर्माण करून गेला.

विदर्भातील आरोग्य व्यवस्थेला बळकटी देण्यात त्यांचे योगदान विशेष उल्लेखनीय आहे. वैद्यकीय महाविद्यालये व रुग्णालयांच्या उभारणीसारख्या उपक्रमांमुळे आरोग्यसेवेचा पाया मजबूत झाला आणि कोविड-१९ महामारीसारख्या अत्यंत कठीण काळातही या सुविधांनी महत्त्वाची भूमिका बजावली.

सावंगी (मेघे) येथील आरोग्यसेवा असो किंवा गडचिरोली-मेळघाटातील आदिवासी भागात पोहोचलेली मदत दत्ताभाऊंनी नेहमीच समाजाच्या शेवटच्या घटकापर्यंत पोहोचण्याचा ध्यास घेतला. शिक्षणाच्या माध्यमातून ग्रामीण भागातील तरुणांना नवी दिशा दिली, अनेक गरजू विद्यार्थ्यांचे आयुष्य घडवले आणि संकटात सापडलेल्या कुटुंबांना आधार दिला. त्यांच्या दारी आलेला कुणीही माणूस निराश परत गेला नाही.

मतभेदांच्या पलीकडे जाऊन नातं जपणारा त्यांचा मोठेपणा नेहमीच प्रेरणादायी राहील. त्यांच्या जाण्याने मी माझा एक जिव्हाळ्याचा आधारस्तंभ गमावला आहे.

ईश्वर त्यांच्या पुण्यात्म्यास शांती देवो आणि त्यांच्या कुटुंबीयांना तसेच असंख्य कार्यकर्त्यांना या दुःखातून सावरण्याचे बळ देवो, हीच प्रार्थना.
