O Christmas tree, o cosmic tree 🎄
Located about 2,500 light-years from Earth, NGC 2264 is a cluster of young stars between one and five million years old. The stars appear as blue and white lights surrounded by swirls of gas—the “pine needles” of the tree—with green representing light in the visible spectrum.

@CheerupR@luke_leisher_ Ah, I once write a paper on that question. You need a rocket about 100x larger for the same payload. With chemical propulsion that's borderline sensible. Nuclear will work fine but have risks. Paper: Int.J. of Astrobiology, Volume 18, Issue 5, pp. 393-395 https://t.co/v1iAWXUGaM
Just to reiterate for the curious:
While there's *nothing wrong* with thinking about whether some interstellar objects could be alien technology, 3I/ATLAS has had its coma clearly detected since July 3. It's very clearly, *unambiguously*, a comet.

Rusal Explores Bauxite Mining Opportunities in Sierra Leone, Ambassador Confirms
Russian aluminum giant Rusal has taken steps to explore potential bauxite mining sites in Sierra Leone , according to the country’s ambassador to Russia, Mohamed Yongawo . Representatives from Rusal recently visited Sierra Leone to assess mining opportunities under a concession agreement, signaling growing interest in collaboration between the two nations.
A Mutual Interest in Collaboration
In an interview with Sputnik , Ambassador Yongawo highlighted Rusal’s clear intent to engage with Sierra Leone. “Rusal has made it clear that the company is interested in working together and collaborating with Sierra Leone. And I think Sierra Leone is open to working with Rusal,” he said.
The ambassador emphasized that while both parties are keen to move forward, certain legal and regulatory hurdles must first be addressed. These include clarifying laws surrounding concessions and ensuring compliance with local regulations.
Negotiations Underway
Yongawo expressed optimism about resolving these issues, stating:
🗣️ “I believe that as soon as the issues of laws and concessions can be resolved, a common language can be found... And as soon as this interest becomes obvious, and Rusal receives a license for the concessions that are needed, then, of course, this discussion will continue.”
He confirmed that negotiations between Rusal and Sierra Leone are ongoing, reflecting the seriousness of the potential partnership. Earlier, Julius Mattai , Sierra Leone’s Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, told Sputnik that Freetown was actively discussing a concession agreement with Rusal for bauxite mining—an essential raw material for aluminum production.
Why Sierra Leone?
Sierra Leone holds significant untapped reserves of bauxite, making it an attractive destination for global mining companies like Rusal. The West African nation is eager to attract foreign investment to boost its economy and develop its mineral sector sustainably. For Rusal, securing access to new bauxite sources could strengthen its position as one of the world’s largest aluminum producers.
Challenges Ahead
While the prospects of collaboration appear promising, challenges remain. Legal frameworks governing mining concessions must be carefully negotiated to ensure transparency, environmental protection, and equitable benefits for Sierra Leone. Both parties recognize the importance of addressing these details to lay the groundwork for a successful partnership.
A Strategic Partnership in the Making
If finalized, the deal could mark a significant milestone for both Rusal and Sierra Leone. It would not only expand Rusal’s supply chain but also provide Sierra Leone with much-needed economic growth and infrastructure development.
For now, all eyes remain on the ongoing negotiations, as stakeholders work to align interests and pave the way for what could become a landmark collaboration in the mining industry.

This terrain was full of jagged rocks, loose rocks, and sand, but I made it through one careful maneuver at a time.
I am still sooooo happy YouTube increased their shorts length to 3 min.

For those, like me, who are fascinated by our place in time, this new study challenges the idea that Earth’s biosphere has just a Gyr left. https://t.co/cb0uqm6yr8
@Astro_Wright@skdh I only found this "authorized translation" from 1914 which is not a literal translation of the original paper, but of a book which appears to contain a re-write of the original paper https://t.co/IpyWhwNYqz pp.222ff
Does anyone know of an English translation of the entirety Planck's classic paper on his eponymous natural units "Ueber irreversible Strahlungsvorgänge"?

Not a paradox, Comet 13P/Olbers is returning to the inner Solar System after 68 years. The periodic, Halley-type comet will reach its next perihelion or closest approach to the Sun on June 30 and has become a target for binocular viewing low in planet Earth's northern hemisphere night skies. But this sharp telescopic image of 13P is composed of stacked exposures made on the night of June 25. It easily reveals shifting details in the bright comet's torn and tattered ion tail buffeted by the wind from an active Sun, along with a broad, fanned-out dust tail and slightly greenish coma. The frame spans over two degrees across a background of faint stars toward the constellation Lynx.
