Earlier this month, @RepTonyWied (WI-8) spent part of his day trackside in Green Bay, touring short line rail operations with the Fox Valley & Lake Superior Rail System (FOXY), @WatcoRail and GoRail.

He watched a crew pick up empty cars and prep them for transfer to the CN yard for switching, then dug into the policy questions that matter most for Wisconsin's short lines: reauthorizing the Short Line Railroad Tax Credit (45G), avoiding prescriptive mandates, and continued federal rail grant funding.

Conversations like this one are how freight rail's role in Wisconsin's economy gets understood in Washington. Thanks to Rep. Wied for making the time.

Digital Train Inspection Portals (DTIPs) help rail employees spot potential issues before they become bigger problems. By scanning trains at normal speed and creating a digital health record for every railcar, DTIPs are advancing modern rail safety.

U.S. railroads are on the move! Weekly rail traffic rose 3.0% YoY for the week ending August 08, 2026, according to our Policy & Economics team.

This week’s gains:

Good policy solves problems. Great policy solves the right problems.

The Railway Safety Act would impose a wide range of new federal mandates on railroad operations, from staffing requirements to equipment standards. But effective regulation should be guided by data, cost-benefit analysis, and demonstrated safety outcomes.

As @kristianstout writes, "Congress should favor performance-based rules that set measurable safety goals while allowing railroads to choose how to meet them."

That's an approach that promotes both safety and innovation.
