Crazy how all the farthest homers of all time were from an era without video recordings and poor data collection, and not from the era where everyone was on steroids 🤔
I don’t think a lot of people appreciate how much of their overall lifestyle and relative certainty is backstopped by a steady, boring stability of systems they don’t understand or even realize exist.
The WSJ documented over $50 billion in Medicare Advantage fraud -- insurers systemically diagnosing fake diseases in patients so they can overbill the gov. That is 100000x more than any of the silly sounding grants that go viral here.
My entire scientific career I have been cautioning against climate doomerism. It’s dangerously unhealthy for young people and leads into apathy.
Humanity won on ozone depletion. Much of the world has been successful on acid rain and air pollution. Climate is winnable.
I notice a lot of urbanists or 20 somethings take it as a badge of honor that a lot of middle class people feel uncomfortable with ‘grittier’ aspects of urban life which I get to a point but at some point it crosses a threshold and it’s LARPY as hell

It is extremely telling that Jacobin just deleted this line claiming Blackstone owns a third of the US housing stock instead of updating it using the correct number (0.07%).
Wouldn't want facts to get in the way of a good anti-capitalist narrative...
NYT is softening every edge in the framing but this article is a bombshell
Conclusive evidence that environmental scientists have been willing to use the ESA to knowingly invent "conservation species" and then (after passage in 1970) using the newly created NEPA to litigate
@X9558430327378X @Animaten_Saine Encanto was 🗑️
There’s literally no plot. “Oh my whole family blames my uncle for being the bearer of bad news, and our magic house is breaking as a symbol of our family bonds. Oh look I found him in the walls, and now we all love each other again.”
@ryanmupfudze@JonKrawczynski @Emeritus_78 Ironically BD actually led the league in 3PA in 2004 despite only hitting 32% of them. Teams shoot so many 3s today because it’s efficiently optimal, not sure how it affects watchability but I personally like the modern game MUCH more than the isoball of the 2000s.
@ryanmupfudze@JonKrawczynski @Emeritus_78 Nearly every player in the league tries very hard on defense, offenses are just approaching the bounds of peak efficiency.
BD & Franchise were fringe all-star/all-NBA guys then which is about where they’d be now.
@NielsHoven I think this was a good explanation for Chamath’s legitimate question, but then Chamath didn’t respond or boost the answer to his question

@chamath Again, not the full story. Both chambers had their own versions, both advanced the bills with huge bipartisan majorities (kids cancer research is popular with both parties!), and the plan was to reconcile the two versions in the year-end budget bill.
@GolerGkA@buccocapital@tszzl Yep. Numberphile has a good video on it. I’d say if you just give someone the rules and have them work on it even if they struggle with it, they should eventually find all 10. Anyone in math at Harvard shouldn’t need that help.
