@CartlandDavid 1. Adverse events are any “event” reported by patient /doc - not proven to be related. (Eg “diarrhoea” in the days after vax). A smal fraction of these are causal and serious.
2. 158k reactions reported in 40k people. A small % of milllions of people vaxed.
“These types of insights – the ones that you can only really get from large cohorts - are really valuable” ...

We are heartbroken to announce that Prof (Stephen) Ben Walsh, died peacefully on 30th Sept while surrounded by family & friends.
Both his family & @RenalUCL are raising funds to find a way to honour his memory and achievements. More info below:

Ben's passion for science & medicine was an integral part of who he was. And after self-diagnosing with lung cancer 18 months ago, he decided keep his condition private to protect his clinical and academic work. Remarkably Ben continued to work throughout his illness, right to the very end, ensuring that his students, colleagues and patients were taken care of, and that all he had built would continue on.
There are no words to really express the profound sadness we feel, the loss of a dear friend, colleague and mentor. He will leave a very large hole in our lives and he will not be forgotten.
Details of funeral/memorial services will be made available in due course.
We're also requesting anyone with pictures or videos of Ben to upload these to the Google Photos or Dropbox links below. We've also attached a link to a Google Doc for messages of condolence you may wish to leave for the family.

Incl an IgA nephropathy project in my group.
We will fill in gaps in pathogenesis, aiming to better match new/upcoming drugs to each patient, and to find angles for next generation of treatments to remedy.

As always many thanks to @The_MRC and @GenomicsEngland, @RenalGenomics and many more!
IL-6 signalling in inflammation affects many pathways. Modulation is associated with adverse events including white cell depletion and gastric perforation. 2 randomised trials in carefully selected patients are ongoing.
Delighted to see this published https://t.co/CrMx4bcbUU. With colleagues at @GSTTnhsrenal unit @cnuteducation Caroline Dudreuilh @cdudreuilh Ran Perera and Prof Anthony Dorling. Case report and review of tocilizumab (TCZ) and IL-6 pathway modulation in kidney transplantation.
Most report are case series of desensitsation or cABMR treatment. Some centres report successful use for cABMR (standard care can be inadequate), but the only (small) matched case control study showed no difference. A small RCT for subclinical inflammation showed resolution.
New grant success 🎉

Beating #KidneyFailure needs #RareDisease cures. @RenalRaDaR data out today reveals a staggering 28x higher 5-year kidney failure risk in 28k people with #RareKidney diseases c/w 2.8 million with #CKD. Trajectories in 28 diseases included for reference https://t.co/gVF7Ow0mAM
The use of the phrase “ancestry-specific variant” is increasing, particularly to describe rare Single-nucleotide variants (SNVs). But these alleles are not ancestry-specific. They have not yet been found elsewhere, but they will be. 1/n

Deeply disturbed and saddened by news of the death of Alexei Navalny.
Putin fears nothing more than dissent from his own people.
A grim reminder of what Putin and his regime are all about.
