The Western Indian Ocean Consortium (WIO-C) annual meeting took place this week in Maputo, Mozambique—bringing together partners focused on marine & coastal ecosystem management across the region.
Happening Now : Environment and Climate Change, Principal Secretary Dr Eng Festus K Ng'eno is presiding over the 10th anniversary celebration of the Upper Tana Nairobi Water Fund Trust (UTNWFT) at Serena Hotel in Nairobi.
The event, themed “A Decade of Conservation,” marks ten years of efforts to protect water sources supplying the capital while improving livelihoods in the Upper Tana watershed.
The breakfast meeting brings together national and county leaders, development partners, conservation experts, utilities, farmers and community representatives to reflect on the Trust’s progress since its launch in 2015.
UTNWFT is widely recognised as Africa’s first Water Fund and has grown from a pilot project into an independent conservation trust.
Over the past decade, the initiative has promoted nature-based solutions to reduce sediment flowing into rivers that supply Nairobi while improving agricultural productivity for upstream communities.
Among those attending the event are Moses Badilisha, Governor of Nyandarua County; Jennifer Morris, CEO of The Nature Conservancy (virtually); Ademola Ajagbe - Regional Managing Director, Africa, The Nature Conservancy, and Eddy Njoroge, President of the UTNWFT Board of Trustees, alongside development partners representatives from Nyeri County, Laikipia County and Murang’a County. #WaterFund #DecadeOfConservation

Reflecting on 2025, we're filled with gratitude. 💚
Every acre protected, every river restored—it all starts with you. THANK YOU.

MYTH: Scientists don’t agree on climate change.
TRUTH: 97% of experts agree humans are driving global warming.
If 97 out of 100 doctors told you a treatment would save your life, would you ignore them? The same principle applies here.
#HighSeasTreaty is officially in force creating the first global framework to protect marine life beyond national borders. This opens the door to high seas marine protected areas, stronger safeguards and more equitable sharing of ocean benefits #60toGlobal https://t.co/Za6Yf26NUc

A happy community coming together to restore what we all depend on💧🌳- People 👩🏾🌾
A water catchment slowly coming back to life with the over 6,500 indigenous trees we planted together across, Kwa Mukonza Springs, MaKiu Springs and Nthange Springs- Planet. 🌍
And an extra boost for future family earnings through the over 2000 fruit tree seedlings we distributed across to farmers to support livelihoods - Prosperity💰.
All our three pillars at the Green Generation Initiative (@GGI_Kenya) evident through this project; People, Planet, & Prosperity.
This is what gives me hope. On ground actions, rooted in community, growing into something meaningful.💚
We are proud of our partnership with The Nature Conservancy in Africa @Nature_Africa on this project.
