We appreciate President Erdoฤanโs support for diplomacy and regional de-escalation. Progress is possible when nations choose dialogue, partnership, and a shared commitment to peace and security.
๐จ๐พ๐ช๐บ๐น๐ท@Christodulides โI have said many times that Turkey is not going to proceed with the resolution of the Cyprus issue unless it feels that it will benefit from this solution. The only factor that can offer such benefits to Turkey is the European Union.โ https://t.co/Pj0d0cZmjM
Todayโs 3+1 Energy Ministerial Dialogue, bringing together #Cyprus, #Greece, #Israel and the #USA, as well as the launch of the Eastern Mediterranean Energy Center in Houston, constitute a development of particular political and geostrategic significance.
At a time when energy security has become a critical factor for the stability and resilience of states, the Eastern Mediterranean is assuming ever greater importance. Cooperation among the four countries establishes a stable framework for dialogue and coordination, aimed at harnessing the regionโs energy potential, strengthening connectivity and developing common approaches to emerging challenges.
The launch of the Eastern Mediterranean Energy Center #EMEC gives this cooperation even greater substance and a more practical dimension. It establishes a permanent mechanism, based in Houston, one of the worldโs leading energy hubs, which can serve as a point of reference for the exchange of expertise, the development of joint initiatives, closer cooperation with the academic and business communities and the advancement of implementable solutions. These efforts can deliver shared benefits for the 3+1 countries and for regional partners, within the broader framework of advancing strategic multilateralism.
The Eastern Mediterranean Energy Center is linked to the implementation of a provision of the 2019 Eastern Mediterranean Security and Energy Partnership Act. Today, that same strategic direction is gaining renewed momentum through the Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act, which promotes the Eastern Mediterranean as a strategic bridge connecting #Europe, the #MiddleEast and #India, with explicit reference to the importance of Cyprus, the 3+1 framework and critical regional infrastructure.
This continuity carries particular political significance. It demonstrates that the upgrading of relations between ๐จ๐พ๐บ๐ธ is part of a coherent strategy that is steadily acquiring greater institutional depth, concrete instruments and practical substance.
Our geographic position is important. Its true value, however, is enhanced by our credibility, the partnerships we build and our consistent presence wherever developments are shaped.

I think this US-Iran MOU may be the best the United States can hope for as an offramp for this conflict in order to reopen the Strait and get back to the negotiating table. This is not, however, a great deal for the United States. Even after the U.S. totally whacked Iran militarily, I don't think this is a better deal than we could have gotten before the war.
I hope I'm wrong, but I remain skeptical that the United States can turn this into a detailed and lasting agreement. The Iranians are emboldened, not chastened. After having threatened regional escalation and the closure of the Strait for years, Tehran now has proof of concept. The Iranian strategic calculus has not changed in ways likely to support a long-term diplomatic solution. Iran's ballistic missile program and support to proxies -- always off limits for Iranian negotiators -- will remain a huge problem, most notably for Israel.
Is this MOU worth it even if it doesn't produce a lasting agreement? Yes, it can be. In the past, the process of US-Iran negotiations has been helpful in reducing the temperature, preventing escalation, and also helping both sides to understand redlines. If the MOU and subsequent negotiations can help prevent renewed regional war and reopen the Strait, then maybe it can lay the groundwork for a future deal -- and that might be in the next administration.

Despite ministerial meetings of EMGF and 3+1 in the US this week, the Eastern Mediterranean is more fragmented than ever and individual commercial decisions are locking in vulnerabilities that will be hard to reverse - my latest for @gmfus
