Develop new algorithms as a PhD student: $30k/year
Use pre-built sklearn models as a data scientist: $120k/year
Build regression models in excel as a hedge fund analyst: $200k/year
Make pie charts as a CEO: $14 million/year
Data scientists - myself included - are very bad at naming variables. We need to remember:
1. A variable name should describe the entity the variable represents
2. Your code is read more times than it is written. Prioritize readability over quick writing.
I believe machine learning can help us make better decisions, but the hype is concerning because it leads to unfulfilled promises. Realizing when a problem can be solved with a spreadsheet and a few graphs is as valuable as knowing how to build a machine learning system.
