I’m a retired brain surgeon and I wanna tell you why you feel like life is passing by. I just need one minute to explain this to you so hang in there.
Repetitive daily routines stop the brain from recording clear detailed memories. When every day looks the same, your brain does not track time the same as a clock does. It tracks change. If nothing new happens then days, months, and years start to blur together.
This is know as Time compression. When life lacks variety, your brain compresses past days together, making it feel like time is sped up.
To stop feeling like life is passing you by, add new experiences to your life. Break routine habits, like changing your daily home routine, taking a different route to work, or trying a new hobby.
Schedule small trips or plan new adventures so your days do not blend together.
Practice mindfulness by staying fully focused on what you are doing right now and not trying to race off to the next task.
Keep a journal and write down happy memories or memorable parts of the day before you go to sleep.
Take deep, calm breaths when you feel anxious or rushed to return your focus to the moment.
You can and you will retrain your brain to not feel like life is passing you by by following these few simple measures.
The ultimate goal is getting paid to be yourself. To solve problems you can't help but solve. To study what you can't pull yourself away from. To eliminate any work that does not challenge you creatively.
A Monday morning question for you:
I'm not usually awake from 5am to 6am, but when I am I tend to enjoy it. Start the day slow. Watch the sunrise. Get a few things done before everyone else wakes up.
Meanwhile, I am often awake from 10pm to 11pm and I find that I tend to use it poorly. Passively watching TV or scrolling on a screen. Late-night snacking. Generally focusing on things that are fairly unimportant.
Trading the last hour of the night for the first hour in the morning would be a pretty high-value trade for me.
Which hours of your day tend to return the most value and which ones tend to return the least?
I can't explain it, but it seems your fortune changes based on your location. That is why a moving man meets his luck. Keep moving and don't be static. When you find your place, consolidate. A word is too much for the wise.
If you are a Young Man
You are living in a time
Where the boomers are retiring and the people your age can't focus for more than 2 minutes and are addicted to their phones
There is no competition... you can literally take whatever you want
Don't let anyone tell you different.
Rumi was absolutely fucking right, and you can literally get luckier by relaxing & believing everything is rigged in ur favor, you're lucky, and everything will somehow be taken care of.
The only downside is that u won't get others sympathy which u get by believing otherwise.
Dopamine from information gathering is a dangerous drug.
It’s the dopamine you get from reading. From planning. From learning. But never doing.
Information gathering as sport. Jammed into neat little dopamine feedback loops that convince you that you're doing something productive and valuable.
You're just one piece of information away from the big breakthrough. You'll start when your business plan is perfected. You'll meet your partner when you've scrolled through another round of profiles. You'll get that dream job when you have one more degree in hand.
Your entire life will change when you realize the world isn't run by a bunch of geniuses. The world is being run by a bunch of normal people with abnormal bias for action.
The answer you seek is hidden in the action you avoid.
Dopamine from information gathering is a dangerous drug.
Get your dopamine from action.
You can cold email nearly anyone, but nearly everyone overlooks how powerful it can be.
Sending one email each week that feels like a stretch can change your life. Will you get turned down? Sure, most of the time. But you only need one to pay off for something amazing to happen.
Take your time, write a thoughtful message, and muster the courage to press Send.
Your entire life will change when you realize energy is the most attractive human trait. Not looks, wealth, or status. Energy. Start walking into rooms with genuine enthusiasm, curiosity, and interest. Watch what happens. You become a magnet for the highest quality people. Energy is contagious. Spread the kind you’d want to catch.
“People underestimate how long it takes to win big. You struggle for 10 years. Eventually, in one day, you achieve more than you did your entire life. Be patiently aggressive.”
— Patrick Bet-David
This may be controversial: The goal isn’t to be disciplined. The goal is to have a high Return on Discipline.
Being disciplined around things that don’t provide any return in the form of life outcomes isn’t something to celebrate.
If you have limited energy, you want to use those discipline points on the things that actually matter. The things that have a high return on that discipline.
And Return on Discipline is entirely individual. The ROD of a specific action will vary by person based on their life and goals.
Things that have low return on discipline (for me):
- Making the bed
- No tv before bed
- Seated meditation
I’ve tried all of them for extended periods and never felt the benefit. They just spent my discipline points on things that didn’t really move the needle in my life.
Things that have a high return on discipline (for me):
- 4:30am wake up
- Daily hard fitness
- No phone periods during day
The point is that you want to choose your discipline wisely.
Don’t accept someone else’s version as your own. Experiment, test, kill, and keep according to what you find.
Be disciplined, but on things that matter in your life.
Have a high Return on Discipline.
Improvement is a battle that must be fought each day anew.
Your next workout doesn't care how strong your last one was.
Your next essay doesn't care how popular your last one was.
Your next investment doesn't care how smart your last one was.
Your best effort, again.
i don't know who needs to hear this but your ability to create the reality that you want is directly determined by your willingness to experience its opposite.
- saving money will have you feeling broke while it's actually making you rich.
- setting boundaries will have you feeling alone while you're creating new healthy relationships in your life.
- digging up your trauma will have you feeling broken while it's actually healing you.
- working out has you feeling weak while it's really making you strong.
- learning something new makes you feel dumb while it's making you more intelligent.
your ability to attain the thing that you want is directly correlated with how willing you are to experience its opposite. you have to be ok with being uncomfortable to truly achieve success!
